Both Sides of the Fence

A Tosa resident since 1991, Christine walks the dog, raises kids, cooks but avoids housework, writes and reads, and works too much. A Quaker and The Aging Maven, she has been known to stand on both sides of the political and philosophic fence at the same time, which is very uncomfortable when you think about it. She writes about pretty much whatever stops in to visit her busy mind at the moment. One reader described her as "incredibly opinionated but not judgmental." That sounds like a good thing to strive for!

McCain and the BlackBerry

By Christine McLaughlin

When I started my BlackBerry® riff the other day, I had no idea that Senator John McCain created the device.

That's a little surprising, as he doesn't know how to use computers or  e-mail, but I guess when you've been a prisoner of war there's nothing you can't do.

Actually, it was McCain advisor Douglas Holtz-Eakin who made the claim. Eager to tout McCain's work in supporting the telecommunications industry as evidence that the senator has what it takes to fix the "Wall Street meltdown," Holtz-Eakin held up his own BlackBerry® personal communications device yesterday and told reporters, "You're looking at the miracle that John McCain helped create. . . .He can and has the judgment to put people in place with technical expertise, with the history of experience in the areas necessary, that we're going to get reforms."

To Luddite McCain's credit, he apparently laughed when he heard the story.

Still, the choice of staffer Holtz Eakin makes you wonder about that judgment to put the right people in the right place at the right time. As for the BlackBerry® whatchamacallit, it's an addictive little device, judging by the new levels to which it's taken distractedness. It changes the way we talk to, and ignore, each other. But it doesn't think new ideas for us.

Sen. McCain chooses not to use computers and email because injuries he sustained while a POW in Hanoi makes using a keyboard difficult if not impossible.

That being said, to what do you attribute your ignorance of relevant facts pertaining to this issue to?

I see nothing wrong in lambasting a candidate for things a staffer says. But to insult a man like McCain using "media-hyped" hyperbole that has already been discredited, is in rather poor taste.

Dear Cheesehead,

Two words: voice recognition.

As to who I'm lambasting, well, it's people who think that technology is the same as reform. That, and a smaller lambast to those who say trust me to surround myself with the right people and. . . don't.

Urban:

To point out that Christine was using a discredited media hyped lie about Sen. McCain, i.e. he doesn't know how to use computers and email, was not an attempt to "match her wit".

That would require me to tie half my wits behind my back.

Calling it as I see it

We should judge candidates by who they surround themselves with.   What is your opinion of Obama's selection of Franklin Raines for his campaign economic advisor, who ran Fannie Mae into the ground and walked away with many millions?  Same with Jim Johnson of Fannie Mae -- he led his Vice President search committee.  What does that say about Senator Obama's ability to select his advisors?

Calling It....

Lest we forget the names of Obama associates:

William Ayers

Tony Rezko

Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Jr.

Democratic Socialists of America (DSA)
