Both Sides of the Fence

A Tosa resident since 1991, Christine walks the dog, raises kids, cooks but avoids housework, writes and reads, and works too much. A Quaker and The Aging Maven, she has been known to stand on both sides of the political and philosophic fence at the same time, which is very uncomfortable when you think about it. She writes about pretty much whatever stops in to visit her busy mind at the moment. One reader described her as "incredibly opinionated but not judgmental." That sounds like a good thing to strive for!

Last chance to see America the Beautiful?

No, this isn't another dire prediction of the end of life as we know it. Though there is a bit of wishful thinking that the beauty industry might come crashing down like so many  financial and other fantasy-based businesses are these days.

America the Beautiful is a must-see documentary  for women, daughters, and the men who like us and are bewildered about why we have such distorted notions about ourselves. As one young man who saw the film's Wisconsin premiere Tuesday night at the Times asked director Darryl Roberts, "Why can't I convince all the beautiful girls in my high school classes that they aren't ugly?" That's a question many of us have asked about others, if not ourselves.

Roberts' film gives you some pretty good ideas why. It's fascinating, cringe-worthy, funny, and sad. If you're someone who fears being lectured by feminists (excuse me for omitting the obligatory adjective "shrill"), know that Roberts is a mild man, and the best part of the movie might be the Greek chorus of average guys on the street he managed to line up on the couch.

Tonight, Wednesday November 26 at 7, is the last showing here. Take a break from your Thanksgiving preparations to see it. You'll be glad you did.

By the way, the Times (59th and Vliet) has replaced some of its seats with couches, a la the Rosebud. They serve beer and wine. And there's dessert at Meritage or Cold Spoons nearby. Support local business!
