Comments: FOLLOW THE RULES (oops, I just broke one)

So, the powers that be (TPTB) decided to institute a commenting feature on the blogs awhile back.  So, now, it's getting a little out of hand.  So, now TPTB have decided that there are going to be rules about comments.  I got an email about The Rules this evening.

The Rules will soon be posted on all blogs.  If readers' comments do not follow The Rules, I am not supposed to publish them.  If something gets by me or TPTB disagree with my decision to publish a comment(s), they will pull the comment(s) themselves.  That is also part of The Rules.

When we started with the whole comments thing, I reviewed all of them before they posted to the blog.  But because I don't generally write "inflammatory/controversial" material, I decided to let comments publish automatically. This worked well until just recently.

So, now we have The Rules.  So, now I have to review everything again.  If I don't, I'll get in trouble.

I'd tell you what The Rules are, but my head hurts right now.  I think it's all these rules... or maybe the sushi I had for dinner.

(The Rules are going to be the same guidelines that the JSOnline bloggers use.  Click here to view them.)

So now comments can be deleted, edited, and censured. Bloggers can determine if a comment is relevant, appropriate, or offensive based on broad guidelines. I guess we will never know just what people are thinking because we'll never be quite sure what they REALLY (oops, capitalized) said. That was for emphasis, I wasn't shouting. Does this mean Bob Flessas can't use his graphics and audio any longer? This should render BrookfieldNow impotent.

Just a few more things about comments.

Because I have to review comments first, it may take awhile for you to see your comment.  (I will try to check at least twice a day for new comments.)

Also, bloggers always had the ability to withhold comments from posting.  What's different now is that the NOW editors, if they disagree with a blogger's decision to publish a particular comment, can delete the comment from the blog if the editors decide that it violates the comment policy. It is no longer the sole decision of the blogger.

I have a question into TPTB about editing comments.  Before, they said we should not edit comments at all.  So, until I hear otherwise, I'll assume that is still the case.

Personally I'd like to see the NOW people being the ones who determine if a comment is appropriate or not. Too many bloggers censor comments which oppose the bloggers view. This is the NOW peoples site. Some bloggers make very attack oriented comments but than will not post rebuttal comments that make them look bad.

Regarding the editing of comments, I received confirmation that comments should not be edited. This means that if your comment contains any material that violates the comment policy, the entire comment will be withheld.

It's all or nothing.
