Senate Democrats costing schools millions of dollars

The Wisconsin Department of Administration (DOA) has issued a report comparing estimated school aid numbers under the Governor’s budget and current law.

The Republican-controlled Assembly approved Assembly Bill 506 (AB 506) to fund local school districts while state budget negotiations continue. AB 506 funds school districts at the same level as the Governor’s budget. The Democrat-controlled Senate refuses to schedule Senate floor action on AB 506 to appropriate state school aid.

State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster is using current law to prepare aid estimates for schools. The DOA’s report calculates the amount of aid that school districts may lose as a result of the Senate Democrats’ refusal to take action on AB 506.

The difference between the Governor’s budget and AB 506 funding of schools and current law is staggering:

Total statewide general aid under the Governor’s budget (AB 506 funding is identical) for 2007-08: $4, 713, 118, 878.

Total statewide 2007-08 general aid under current law, without an approved 2007-09 state budget: $4,626, 381,114.

There is a difference of $86, 737, 764 that school districts statewide will lose because Senate Democrats will not schedule a floor session to approve AB 506 to fund schools.

Remember this the next time Democrats claim Republicans do not care about public education.

Day to day political decisions made by Republicans show their lack of commitment to public education(for that matter almost anything public). The big push by Republicans to privatize educational services or to use public money to fund private school education (vouchers) to the detriment of public schools is all you need to look at to realize how Republicans feel about public education.

I'm sure there is a strategic reason why Republicans want to separate the budget items. Perhaps it will allow them to prevent the

Governor from utilizing money from non educational parts of the budget for educational purposes. I know this was a big issue in the last budget. If the government collects gas taxes to pay for highway improvements I feel that's what they should be spent on. The problem these days is that Republican's are so anti-public spending that our public education system is no longer being maintained or funded properly. As a last resort the Governor is forced to reallocate funding to keep the public education system from being worse off than it's already becoming. It's so obvious Republicans in general don't like public education, or public broadcasting or Social Security or interstate highways  or public heathcare or public (you name it). I don't think anything has changed these days and now Republicans are FOR a strong public education system.

"As a last resort the Governor is forced to reallocate funding to keep the public education system from being worse off than it's already becoming."

If that's true then why won't Governor Doyle approve AB 506 and, therefor, increase current spending on education by over $86 million while the state budget is being debated?

I'm just guessing here but I'll bet it has something to do with the Republicans refusal to approve the other billion plus dollars in tax increases proposed by Governor Doyle this year.
