Gambling was banned many years ago for good reason; it destroys lives. It started with the lotteries, and now its developed into full scale casinos all over the country. Yes it brings in a lot of revenue to the government, but it primarily takes the money from those that are least equipped to pay for it.

For many, gambling is an addiction not unlike drug use, alcohol, or smoking. Government sponsored gambling is akin to government deciding that only they could sell alcohol during prohibition. Or that only government would be allowed to sell crack or pot at government run outlets. It is arrogance and hypocrisy of the highest order.

This is why I am disgusted with the ways around paying local sales taxes. It costs people who do not shop on the internet. In effect, we are paying for freeloaders. These Interent stores not having the overhead of collecting and then paying sales taxes only adds to the difficulty of small business within the state trying to make ends meet. There is a place for Internet stores. For example, I recently bought a clothes drier from Sears entirely on the Internet and had it installed without me ever having to burn a drop of gasoline or take the time going to and wandering around a store. I paid my sales taxes. It's way past time that residents of the state pay thier share of our taxes. After all, misery, when it comes to taxes, NEEDS company.

I know smokers who welcome the tax increase because it will help them quit smoking. That doesn't help Lazich's funders, and ultimately the taxes will have to be made up elsewhere. But those smokers who quit because of it will be the benefactors.

Once we get a good system to weed out the unqualified doctors, this will be a place they can get a job. But Lazich would do well to quit taking insurance industry money and seriously try to fix the system. Healthy Wisconsin would go a long way toward that, but the assembly Republicans will have to get out of the pockets of the special interests before we have a shot at passing even that.

I also took the time to review the pay raise the Republican controlled legislature voted for last session that took effect this session. As someone who has been to the "bargaining" table and had to deal with the "QEO", I agree wholeheartedly with the Legislative Fiscal Bureau. Comparing state employee contracts with those controlled by the "QEO" is NOT a valid comparison. The "QEO" must account for fringe benefit payments first. Therefore a "QEO" of say 5% per year may actually involve a pay cut if insurance premiums increase more than that. This does not apply to state contracts including that of Senator Lazich. According to the Office of State Employee Relations the most that state legislators will pay for their health insurance plan this year is $358 per month for the highest level family plan. The pay raise the previous Republican legislature voted for this session from $46,481 on June 24, 2006 to $49,943 on July 8th of this year is a 7.4% raise over the two year period but is not affected by the insurance premium. None of this includes the $44 or $88 per diem legislators recieve when they are in session. Yes that means when they get called into special session for weeks because they did nothing on the budget during the regular session, they get paid $44 or $88 for each of those days.
