MATC: "We Haven't Had Any Standards..."

The Journal Sentinel carried an article this morning about the Practical Nurse program offered by MATC.  This program has been on probation for some time and that continues.  Another evaluation visit is scheduled for the Fall of this year.

Low rates of graduation apparently had prompted the probationary status and the state Board of Nursing has been carefully monitoring the progress or lack thereof at MATC in this program.

Dessie Levy was quoted as saying, "When you talk about implementing standards, our (graduation rate) will reflect a decline because we haven't had any standards (in the past).  She is Dean of Health Occupations for MATC.

WCTC has a similar program and it isn't on probation from all indications.  I was unsuccessful in contacting the Associate Dean at WCTC today, but there is no indication on the state Board of Nursing's website that WCTC is anything but in compliance and good standing.

We have been told repeatedly that our secession petition cannot simply focus on tax rates because apparently the Technical College System isn't concerned about the waste of our money.  We certainly can focus on substandard performance which seems to be the case in this program.

Students who have failed in this endeavor believe the fault lies with MATC and the curriculum.  Stephanie Wren was quoted as saying, "They just didn't prepare us, and I believe they set us up for failure.  When you have that much of your class failing, it seems like there's something wrong at that point."

How many other instances of low standards or no standards are there within MATC?

Another reason to petition for secession and permission to become part of the WCTC district in my opinion.

And this is a organization that our school board feels no need to leave? I cannot for the life of me understand what the school board is thinking on this issue. MATC is a failing school district that overtaxes, underperforms, has no standards and is ripping off the taxpayers and students to the tune of millions of dollars and there seems to be no sense of urgency to act on this?

Hey School Board, WAKE UP, get your head out of where ever it is and take the needed steps to leave MATC. The fact that you have taken no action speaks volumes to the community that you dont care that the community is being ripped off. Come referendum time, I know I will be asking why you did nothing to get us out of MATC. In case you missed it the community is very frustrated with your lack of action.

Irwin,

If you paid attention to the facts, you'd note that the School Board is taking up this issue.  They can't petition to secede from MATC simply because of their outrageous spending and tax rates.  More items like this will certainly help their cause.

Did you join the mass of frustrated people that showed up to speak about this issue at the last school board meeting?  Actually, I recall seeing that nobody spoke on this issue.  There you have it.

CGR, you are very quick to defend this school board!

Tell me how long has the Board been "talking" about leaving the MATC district? They appear to be in no hurry. But you can bet they will be the first ones in line come November to ask for millions for a new school. They might find it easier to get what they are requesting if they show some urgency with the MATC situaton!

SO CGR other than excessive taxation, wasteful spending, failure to educate, no measureable standards, no accountability, poor performance of graduates in the workplace, sweetheart deals on business incubator space, no elected oversight, benefits that are out of control, and a director who makes more than the govenor, I guess those aren't enough reasons to take up leaving the district. Other than that MATC is doing a great job.

Oh yeah lets not forget the laptops.

I guess the School board needs to study this more, reevalute the situation or maybe appoint a committee.

Get real.

Do any of you actually read what I wrote?  I never once said or implied that MATC is doing a decent job.  I merely stated the obvious fact that the District can't use taxes or wasteful spending as a reason to move to another school.

Those alone are great reasons to switch, but they need to focus on the performance issues of MATC.  With all of the issues that have been raised on this forum, there surely will be enough to mount a decent effort to secede.

Have any of you contacted the School Board President or any other members with your concerns?
