I'm Just Saying

Kimberly is a thirty-something gal who grew up in Sussex, gave city life a try, decided she wanted something inbetween and moved her family to Menomonee Falls. She's been married for 12 years, has a seven year old daughter, works in the family business, and is pursuing her master's degree in business administration (almost done!). She enjoys doing anything that keeps her from doing what she is supposed to be doing, and has aspirations to wake up one day and find that she's (suddenly and through no fault of her own) a big-time writer.

Waiting for the Parade

I must confess, I don't care about parades. At all. Maybe it's because I spent a great deal of my childhood marching in parades, both for the Robinette's (I was a baton twirler) and for the Templeton Middle School marching band (I played the clarinet and the flute). Once I got to high school, I quit the band because it was mandatory that we had to march, and I'd had enough marching.

On the way home from work yesterday I took note of all the people along the Menomonee Falls parade route who were scouting out their spot for tonights parade. It almost made me wonder if the parade was last night, instead of tonight. This morning all the stakes and string and caution tape and lawn chairs, and other marking devices were there. My daughter, who is seven, asked me: What is going on? Why are all these people in areas that are marked off with caution tape?? And I had to explain to her that it wasn't police tape in this instance, it was areas that people were marking as their own for the parade which is later tonight.

And this is what she said to me: But it's just a parade.

My point exactly. It's just a parade. I don't get it. What ever happened to showing up for the parade right before the parade started? Where the kids sit on the curb as it passes by, and the adults stand on the sidewalk? Does that not happen anymore?

That's us...showing at the parade right before it starts. We will be going to the Tosa parade tomorrow morning. Park at Mayfair and then walk a few blocks and set camp somewhere in the median. The kids will get candy, we will get sprayed with water, cover our ears a few times, and, when is all over, go home. I guess some people see it as a "tailgate" of sorts: they go early and claim their spot, and hang out until is time...no time for that. So I will be getting there right before, and leave right after...Happy Fourth Of July!

I have three issues with the parade.

1. The oversized kids (40+ adults) that sit in their chairs in the front row and don't let kids sit there.

2. The kids that think they can go 1/4 mile each way to take candy from other kids, just blatantly go up to parade people asking for candy and the parents who just let their kids do that.

3. The parade people who had the brilliant idea of throwing candy out the back of their vehicle in the middle of the parade route (McDonalds) and then having kids scramble into the parade picking up all the loot.

(I am one of those people who try to reserve a spot only to have my kids (and whatever other kids are around) to have a front row seat.  My wife was there at 7:30 PM and there were no seats left.
