In the Race

Now, here, you see, it takes all the blogging I can do to keep in the same place.
If I want to get somewhere else, I must blog twice as fast as that!
You see, I'm in the Red Queen's Race...

Please, NOprah!

I DO NOT LIKE OPRAH!

That's right.  I said it . . . .

In the past couple of weeks, the latest stories regarding OPRAH WINFREY have just put me over the edge.

First I heard about the death in the family.  Well, I felt bad. A death in the family is always horrific.   I heard she was devastated.  Just devastated by the loss of her "baby."  "Baby?"  Wait, Oprah doesn't have any children.  This must be a bad mistake.   Or I heard it wrong.  No .... They said "baby."  Oh....THAT BABY.  Gracie ....her 2-year old retriever.  You know, one of the four dogs she has that she left millions to after she dies?

Now if you or I lost a family pet, you can bet it would not be announced on WORLD NEWS.  If we lost a family member it would not be announced on the news.  PLEASE!

NEXT, it was the sex abuse scandal with Oprah's girl's school in South Africa.   You know the school, the one Oprah built for the girls.  The one with all the fanfare and publicity.  She couldn't just take her billions of dollars and build it.  It had to be a giant media event.  Not only on her show, but EVERYWHERE.

Well, it was shocking to me to hear of the abuse going on in the school.  And I guess it was shocking to Oprah, too, because, back on November 5th it was reported that Oprah said:

"When I first heard about it I spent about a half-hour going around my house crying,"

What was that?  A WHOLE half an hour?

Crying?

I knew Oprah was compassionate, but I never knew how much ....

The next week I heard about "IT."  She's so "ill."   Poor Oprah.  That's why she has gained TWENTY pounds!  She's so ill.  Well, gee whiz.  I was really getting worried for Oprah.  I was trying to think of what deadly disease she must have; you know one that makes you put on the pounds.  Most illnesses make you lose weight.  I thought, must be kidney disease, something bad like that.

Poor Oprah .... It's a THYROID CONDITION.  Yep!  Do you know how many people have thyroid conditions?  Both my sister and sister-in-law have them and have had to drink the iodine cocktail, which subsequently totally  burns your whole thyroid out, because they haven't figured out the way to regulate the dosage properly yet.  So, you end up on medication the rest of your life.  A pill a day.

Still, people LOVE Oprah!

Brandon Renken, a Harvard University graduate who wrote an anti-Oprah column for CampusNut.com, takes issue with Oprah, too:

"No matter who you are, Oprah is NOT like you," he said. "The fact that she can convince you that she is should make you even more afraid of her than I am."

Well, I agree ....

I don't like in-between Oprah,  I didn't like skinny Oprah.   Not fat Oprah, either (I will make an exception for her acting performance in "The Color Purple,"  but, she was acting).  I don't like her talk show, her Oxygen network show, her "O" Magazine. . . I don't like to see her dance, sing, or change her demographic personality depending on who her guest is at the moment.  And I don't like her commercial empire that she tries to shove  down our throats every chance she gets.

She preaches about money and how bad things are in the world and then flaunts how she buys nothing but the best for herself.  She brainwashes her viewers into buying anything she recommends, she attacks people, and stores/businesses, on her show, who personally have wronged her. She implies she is donating all of the "prizes or gifts" on her show, when actually the sponsors or advertisers are donating them. She worships celebrities on her show and brings on children with problems to display them but rarely helps them, and she lied that she had never done drugs, until she was about to be outed, and then quickly told the truth.

Guess what?

I don't care what you think this time!  Unless, like me, YOU also don't like OPRAH!

But I'm fair, I'll still listen to everyone.

So, what do you think?

HMMM....I guess I don't get that unglued over her.  I don't begrudge her the empire that she has set for herself. What does unglue me is the number of women (and some men) who regard her word as gospel.  Its almost like a cult.  When we talk about empowering women, we would hope that more women have access to better information and make intelligent decisions based on that information.  I become very discouraged when people adopt a mantra or philosophy based solely on "what Oprah says".  I have the same feeling for any pundit or televangelist.  I just want people to think for themselves.

I think it is quite obvious that Janet has not been on Oprah's "My Favorite Things" show and taken home a boat load of free stuff!

Advocating Mom -

I am totally in agreement with your statement about people adopting the "what Oprah says" mantra.

So does every well-known or successful black person have Affirmative Action to thank????

I think not!

This blog entry sure took a turn for the worse.

I, personally, like Oprah Winfrey and disagree with Janet.

But that's fine, we all see things differently.

But to suggest that she built her empire (which I think gives a lot back to others and communities) because she was born a black woman is a bit shallow!

I don't understand why affirmative action is even being discussed on this issue.  Name me one successful person in the world who got to the top un-assisted.  You can't.  Period.  Oprah is Oprah because she's an outstanding entrepeneur.  Her race has nothing to do with it.  Hell, her whole audience is a few hundred white women on an average day.  As for the people who hang on her every word, I think that's a tribute to her charisma, personality and brilliance as a media personality (whether you like her or not).  She's managed to do some pretty remarkable things for the benefit of others throughout the world.  I could name you dozens of media personalities who haven't done squat in terms of charitable contributions.  So she's a blow hard know-it-all most of the time.  Who friggin' cares.  Welcome to the world of TV/radio personalities.  It's her job.  It's what she does.  And she's pretty good at it believe it or not.

Josh -

Affirmative action (AA) - right, not this issue, but if that is your view, equating every person that got to the top unassisted with AA, then THAT could be a scary, future debate.

Regarding my friend Oprah, "she's pretty good at it?"  Hardly.  Maybe she USED to be.  Let's just say she trained her "little people" very well.

I am a Past President of the Milwaukee Press Club.  years ago, the club tried to give Oprah the Sacred Cat, an annual award to a national media figure of prominence.

Oprah would have nothing to do with us.

I find it hard to believe that she didn't want the attention, or the award.

She just may have been dissing her hometown...

I heard once that she doesn't like coming back to Milwaukee.  Bad memories, maybe?

So . . . What say you, Kevin Fischer?  Do YOU like Oprah?

had to comment

Janet, I didn't know you really wanted me to reply to your comment. Your comment was quite long and had a lot of questions for me so I will do my best to do this in short order.

Oprah has found a media niche for herself. She is exploiting it to make a lot of money. Probably everything she does in one way or another is designed to have a positive effect on her businesses. She is very good at it. She realizes how humans worship the stars. She is exploiting this as well. I would think you would admire anyone who can put together such a successful business. In the process she is not hurting individuals, if anything she helps quite a few. Not all businesses can claim this. She is running a business and satisfying her customers. You want it to be more than that? America is about making money for yourself and taking care of yourself. At least I would suspect you feel that way. Tell me if you don't. Just reading your blog entries over a period of time tells me you are typical conservative....oh wait....you even say that when you describe your blog. Thus I make the leap that you support the free market belief systems of conservatives. I don't need to actually have you say.........I Janet Evans support free market stuff to know this.

So don't be unglued by Oprah, she's just a big business trying to get bigger and she knows her customer base and is exploiting it. That's your failure to understand. It's nothing more than business.

She's working the room. Just like every other show on television or radio or the newspaper or any other media outlet. Every one of them.

Even you and Kevin. Working the room. Nothing more. Free enterprise at work.

HTC ....  You didn't know I really wanted you to reply to my comment?  How silly of you.

In reading YOUR comment, your large paragraph had me going not one way or another ... yeah, yeah, yeah ...

Next paragraph, back to HTC....Don't tell me what is "my failure to understand,"  I perfectly understand, I am letting you know what I want you to understand about me  ... (which is where I am smiling to myself as I am reading your comment) ....

Next paragraph ....  Ah, as I'm reading it I'm thinking (before I see your last line, "sucker" I've been doing the same thing you are speaking of right here all along ....

Last line .... BINGO ....

Maybe I'm the poor-man's Oprah ....  On second thought, maybe not ....

Good analysis, though.  I give you an 85% ...

In closing ... Maybe you should stay away from the tax blogs.  You have shown your human side in your last comment - first time.  Also you have revealed to me you are indeed a male.  And some of your comments on other blogs over the past months ...  totally off the wall and pulled out of your, well fill in the blank.  You've been playing people.

Enough for tonight.

If staying out of peoples personal social lives and believing in free markets with some regulation is off the wall than I'm off the wall. If realizing that public goods and services need to exist and play an important role in a civil society than once again call me off the wall. If understanding that these goods and services should be funded in the most simple manner possible, like taxes.....again call me off the wall. But I'm also realistic on how the world actually works, not how I'd like it to work.

Why is it that when ever a white person criticizes a black person it is racial?

Yet it is OK for a black comedian or rapper to use the N word.

Why is it if you are against illegal Mexican immigration you are racist and anti-immigrant?

Yet the Mexican government shoots anyone coming over their southern border.

Why is it you criticize someone who is Jewish, that automaticaly makes you Anti-Semitic?

Just remember, if the glove doesn't fit, you must acquit.

Ok, time for a useless piece of information... A friend of mine who I used to teach with was good friends with Oprah when they attended Nicolet together.  Oprah used to come to her house to eat lunch.  She said she was a very quiet and book smart girl that liked to eat chili.

There's my non-connection to Oprah.  Aren't you impressed?

November 29, 2007 9:23 AM

Janet Evans

Karen,

Actually, NO!  Give me something os substance, Karen ... I guess I can let you slide this once.  You aren't going to tell me YOU like Oprah are you?

Bryan ....

In answer to your questions .... I don't know ....  Are you having a bad day today, Bryan?

November 29, 2007 11:05 AM

Kevin Fischer

Janet, do I like Oprah?

Not really.

I'm sort of indifferent.

But I don't see what all the fuss is about. Why she is so popular, I can't figure out.

November 29, 2007 11:05 AM

Janet Evans

I guess there wouldn't be a "fuss" (and there are many people who don't like her) if she just wasn't in our faces all of the time.  The same way Barbra Streisand is ... but with her it's on a different level.

I guess it depends on where you work; who you see everyday.  I don't think a day goes by for me without hearing someone mention Oprah's name.

November 29, 2007 11:11 AM

Karen

Do I like Oprah?  Hmm, I used to like her and now I am so-so on her.  It was a few years back when she started doing some sort of spiritual affirmation daily segment crap thing that made me lose a lot of respect for her.  That followed up with he increasing coziness and almost worship of her Hollywood clan that also made me lose respect for her.  But the ultimate is when she started parading out her anti-war guru's and Al Gore and his phony global warming movie and presented it all to her audience as the gospel truth that made me lose 99% percent of respect for her.  There are a handful of her show topics that interest me and I will watch, when she starts preaching, I turn it off.

Now that she is campaigning for Obama, sadly she is about to fall into the same class of preaching celebrities like Streisand, Sarandon and the rest of the nutbags.

You wanna know who really causes me to become unglued....  Barbara Walters.  She is the very definition of FAKE.  She makes my skin crawl.
