Franklin Common Council Item G5 07/22/08

I attended the Common Council meeting yesterday, Tuesday, July 22nd.

Several interesting items were on the agenda.  I’m going to present those items through short podcasts, in no particular order, and as I have time to go through the tape.

I’ll be starting tonight with Item G5, which was:

Resolution accepting Declaration of Restrictions, Covenants and Easements for Sendik’s West, 5320-5430 W. Rawson Avenue.

This discussion began with Alderman Wilhelm bringing to the attention of the Council and the Mayor that the Development Agreement was a mess.  She had meticulously gone through it and, in the end, this item is being sent back to City Staff to be corrected

The first podcast is Alderman Wilhelm discussing her findings.

The second podcast is an email from Greg Devorkin to Mayor Taylor, explaining what he is responsible for regarding landscaping and maintenance, etc.

One last note, at the last few meetings it has been noticed that the equipment in the Common Council meeting room is on the fritz.  Two meetings in a row the camera that allows you to view documents on television screens wasn’t working, but that has been repaired.  And now the last two meetings, the microphones haven’t been working properly.

It would be nice to have all Common Council meetings done as a webcast.  New Berlin does it with their School Board meetings.  This is something I suggested tonight at our Franklin School Board meeting.  Wishful thinking, I know….but it wasn’t that long ago that I remember viewing our School Board meetings on Public Access T.V.  We’ve gone backwards.

Welcome to the 21st century... isn't broadcasting of these public meetings part of our agreements with our fabulous cable television company. That's what the public access channels are all about. Why can't our elected officials put these aspects of the agreements to use. So many more people could have access to what happens at these meetings on their own time.

I hope the public access channels work better than my "On Demand" channels.

Are you going to be covering the discussion of the rebuilding and improvement of 76TH street? I don't remember what item it was on the agenda. It may have been after you had to leave. This is an interesting and contentious topic. People need to know how the county is bullying and holding Franklin hostage over the proper and safe reconstruction of this increasingly used county roadway. We need to demand that our County Supervisors attend the council meetings where this item is on the agenda to answer to their constituents for the decisions made by county administrative staff. We pay a lot of taxes to Milwaukee County and we need them to maintain their roads in a safe condition.

Also, Steve Olson asked for an update on the Buckhorn Tavern situation. I expect it to be on the next meeting agenda. It's about time. Eddie Keck pleaded guilty a month ago and we spent possibly $5000 on a special investigator without so much as a peep out of the Common Council. They sure weren't talking that way back in January. In the beginning of June the special investigator gave the go ahead for the licensing committee to hold a hearing. Why didn't that happen. Weren't we paying this invesigator for his advise and determinations? Due process... this has been one big $$$$ stall.

Why were the Franklin Police reports, detailing the statements made by the bartenders available on the internet back in January while the investigation was still in progress. And then why did we have to protect the bartenders and bar (to obtain testimony against Eddie Keck) at the expense of the public's safety. That bar is still operating. Were those bartenders and that bar given prosecutorial immunity. After all who would want to willingly give testimony against someone that also incriminates themself.

Scott,

I left at 9:00 right when 76th street started - so thanks for the input on that...I'm afraid the 1/2 hour of citizen comment wore into my evening  : )  Perhaps they will have to start meetings earlier...they seem to be going on pretty late nowadays!

Glad you were able to stay for these items...John ~ Sprawled Out has tapes of that part of the meeting, so perhaps he can cover it.  But it is ridiculous that these meetings can't be broadcast.  Check out the New Berlin School Board site...their webcasts are pretty cool.

Buckhorn...all this delay must mean someone slipped up in the investigation somewhere...don't you think?  What do they expect us to think if they remain silent for so long....due process?  Right.

I'll put up some more podcasts, hopefully tomorrow.  As with transcribing,...it takes a little time to go through a few hours of tape.
