I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, including section 101(b) of Public Law 95-223 (91 Stat. 1625; 50 U.S.C. President's Radio Address...06/14/08

By Janet Evans
Sunday, Jun 15 2008, 06:05 AM

For Immediate Release
Office of the Press Secretary
June 14, 2008

THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. This week I'm traveling in Europe. In the past few days, I have visited Slovenia, Germany, Italy, and the Vatican. I'm spending this Saturday in France. And I will conclude my trip in the United Kingdom.

In my meetings, I've discussed our shared efforts to advance peace and prosperity around the world. America has strong partners in leaders like Italy's Silvio Berlusconi, Germany's Angela Merkel, France's Nicolas Sarkozy, and Britain's Gordon Brown. And together we're pursuing an agenda that is broad and far-reaching.

America
and Europe are cooperating to open new opportunities for trade and investment. We're working to tear down regulatory barriers that hurt our businesses and consumers. We're striving to make this the year that the world completes an ambitious Doha trade agreement -- which will open up new markets for American goods and services, and help alleviate poverty around the world.

America and Europe are cooperating to address the twin challenges of energy security and climate change while keeping our economies strong. We're working to diversify our energy supplies by developing and financing new clean energy technologies. And we're working toward an international agreement that commits every major economy to slow, stop, and eventually reverse the growth of greenhouse gases.

America and Europe are cooperating to widen the circle of development and prosperity. We're leading the world in providing food aid, improving education for boys and girls, and fighting disease. Through the historic commitments of the United States and other G8 countries, we're working to turn the tide against HIV/AIDS and malaria in Africa. And to achieve this noble goal, all nations must keep their promises to deliver this urgent aid.

America
and Europe are cooperating on our most solemn duty: protecting our citizens. Our nations are applying the tools of intelligence, finance, law enforcement, diplomacy, and -- when necessary -- military power to break up terror networks and deny them safe havens. And to protect against the prospect of ballistic missile attacks emanating from the Middle East, we're developing a shared system of missile defense.

We're also working together to ensure that Iran is not allowed to acquire a nuclear weapon. This week, America and our European allies sent a clear and unmistakable message to the regime in Tehran: It must verifiably suspend its enrichment activities -- or face further isolation and additional sanctions. Together, America and Europe are pursuing strong diplomacy with Iran, so that future generations can look back and say that we came together to stop this threat to our people.

In the long run, the most important way we can protect our people is to defeat the terrorists' hateful ideology by spreading the hope of freedom. So America and Europe are working together to advance the vision of two democratic states, Israel and Palestine, living side-by-side in security and peace. We're working together to protect the sovereignty of Lebanon's young democracy. And we're working together to strengthen the democratically elected governments in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In all of these areas, the United States and Europe have agreed that we must take action -- and that we must go forward together. The level and breadth of the cooperation between America and our European allies today is unprecedented. And together we're making the world a safer and more hopeful place. Thank you for listening.

Father's Day, 2008

A Proclamation by the President of the United States of America

On Father's Day, we honor our Nation's fathers for the unconditional love they give to their children and for their selfless dedication to the well-being of their families.

Fathers play a unique and irreplaceable part in the lives of their children and pass along values that help children grow into responsible adults. By providing their sons and daughters with a positive example, fathers help give their children the necessary foundation they need to make wise decisions throughout their lives. Fathers strive to inspire their children to lead lives of integrity, honor, and purpose, and they pray for wisdom and the strength to give their children the love and support they need to achieve their dreams.

All Americans are thankful for the extraordinary efforts of our Nation's fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers, and guardians. Their devotion and encouragement as mentors, providers, and role models help strengthen their families and our country. We are especially grateful for the fathers who serve in our Nation's Armed Forces. These dedicated fathers protect liberty so that all children can have a more promising future. We pray for the safe return of all those serving overseas, and we thank the fathers who support sons and daughters who are defending our freedom around the globe.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, in accordance with a joint resolution of the Congress approved April 24, 1972, as amended (36 U.S.C. 109), do hereby proclaim June 15, 2008, as Father's Day. I encourage all Americans to express their appreciation to all fathers for their many contributions to our Nation's children. I direct the appropriate officials of the Government to display the flag of the United States on all Government buildings on this day. I also call upon State and local governments and citizens to observe this day with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twelfth day of June, in the year of our Lord two thousand eight, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-second.

A Presidential Wedding

President and Laura Bush’s daughter, Jenna, will be getting married Saturday at a private wedding, on the family ranch in Crawford, Texas.  While there have been under a dozen weddings actually at the White House, it’s always been a personal family choice.  And while none of them have been as elaborate affairs as those of foreign royalty, such as Prince Charles and Lady Diana, in 1981, Lynda Byrd Johnson's wedding in 1967 drew 55 million television viewers and Tricia Nixon did have a lavish wedding in 1971.

President Nixon joins the applause as his daughter
Tricia and Edward Cox cut the cake at the White House in 1971.

I'm sure each President who has given his daughter away in marraige has felt no differently than any other proud father on his daughter's wedding day.  And President Bush is no exception.

"President Bush stuck out his right elbow Thursday, jokingly demonstrating how he'll escort his daughter down the aisle at her wedding this weekend.
He made the gesture at Andrews Air Force Base before boarding Air Force One for the flight to Texas, where Jenna Bush will be married Saturday before about 200 guests at the family's 1,600 acre, secluded ranch. Asked if he was excited, the president smiled and gave a thumbs-up."

On The Early Show Wednesday, Laura Bush said to Jenna, "The main advice (for the big day) is just to be there and think about every single minute of it. It's easy to be swept up in the occasion and then not remember that much, and so I hope she'll savor every moment of it. I think it will be a really, really beautiful day, and we're excited about it."

They Were Our Eyes

A United States military search team was digging on a mountainside in southern Laos ten years ago.  They came upon pieces of wreckage of a South Vietnamese helicopter that included pieces of a camera, film, and broken watches.  The helicopter, which had been shot down in 1971, carried four top-rated war photographers, along with seven Vietnamese soldiers.

AP's Henri Huet, left, and Life magazine's Larry Burrows
at the Vietnam-Laos border in 1971.

Yesterday, the few human remains that were recovered were sealed in a capsule and interred at the Newseum, in Washington, D.C., which is devoted to journalism and its history.

"The Associated Press' Henri Huet, 43; Larry Burrows, 44, of Life magazine; Kent Potter, 23, of United Press International; and Keisaburo Shimamoto, 34, a freelancer for Newsweek, were among the 74 dead and missing Vietnam war correspondents at the war's end in 1975 — the most news media casualties of any conflict in the 20th century. "  These were the four photographers who met their fate in that helicopter in 1971.

Vietnam War Photographers Honored  í here

These photo journalists were invaluable during the Vietnam war.  During the Iraq invasion, we had real time pictures from those brave photographers who were in the battle zones with the troops.

In Vietnam, we had to wait for our news.  It seemed we rarely had taped footage, or it was limited.  The photos told the story for us.  They still do.

It always amazes me how reporters and photographers risk their lives, and often give them, to bring to us and to record and preserve history.

Heroes, all.

Quit that "bickering!"

By Janet Evans

Looks like Nancy Pelosi has had to break apart the playground antics of Obama and Clinton and send each of them to a corner for a time-out.

"[Pelosi] said she believes that supporters for both Obama and Clinton, after a long and exciting race, have grown strongly attached to their candidate. She worries how those voters will react when - inevitably - one of the two candidates loses."

"So many new people are involved because of Barack Obama and we don't want them to be disenchanted," Pelosi said. "On the other hand, there is a chance that he might not win, and hopefully he will keep them in the fold. I think it will be about his leadership, too - whether he wins or not - to keep them in the fold and to attract others."

"She said the same is true if Clinton loses the fight for the nomination. Many of Clinton's supporters, especially women, are just as passionate about her candidacy, and those voters will be crucial in November, Pelosi said.""You have to have a thick skin in this business. You can win or you don't win, but it doesn't mean you pick up your marbles and go away," she said."

I don't think the "bickering" has been anything that unusual.

It's not any worse than we have seen in past elections.

And even with Pelosi's reprimand, I believe we will be seeing the war of words between Obama and Clinton reach higher levels as time goes on.

Especially with Obama pulling some of Clinton's old skeletons out from the back of the closet.

It will be interesting to see what Clinton can find to try to knock Obama off his pedestal.

In the meantime, McCain can just sit back and let those two just fight it out.

The less bad mouthing he has to do, the better for him.

American Hero to be Honored....Finally

First Sioux to Receive Medal of Honor

Master Sgt. Woodrow Wilson Keeble,
born in 1917 in Waubay on the Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Reservation,
will be the first Sioux soldier to receive the Medal of Honor when the
White House gives him the posthumous honor in a ceremony planned
for March 3. Keeble risked his life to save fellow soldiers in the Korean War.

Congress Authorizes President to Award Medal of Honor to Woodrow Keeble

Washington, D.C. - Senator John Thune announced that the Fiscal Year 2008 Defense Authorization conference report authorizes the President of the United States to posthumously award the Medal of Honor to Master Sergeant Woodrow Keeble in recognition of his service during the Korean War. Master Sergeant Keeble was a member of the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate Tribe and will be the first Dakota Sioux to receive the Medal of Honor.

"The Medal of Honor is the highest distinction a soldier can earn, and Master Sergeant Woodrow Keeble's valiant service certainly deserves this recognition," said Thune. "Master Sergeant Keeble's legacy is a great source of pride for his family, his fellow Dakota Sioux, and all South Dakotans. I am honored to have played a role in securing this distinction for him."

On approximately October 15, 1951, in the vicinity of Kumsong, North Korea, all of the officers of the G Company were either wounded or killed during enemy combat. Master Sergeant Keeble voluntarily led the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Platoons in three successful assaults. Armed with grenades and a rifle, Keeble then single handedly eliminated three four-man pillboxes. Keeble was severely wounded with at least five separate injuries to his chest, both arms, and both legs. Master Sergeant Keeble was decorated with the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, the Bronze Star First Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Purple Heart with the Oak Leaf Cluster. He was recommended for the Medal of Honor, but never received it.

While serving in the House of Representatives, then-Representative Thune first requested Master Sergeant Keeble's Distinguished Service Cross be upgraded to the Medal of Honor in a letter to the Secretary of the Army on May 17, 2002. Since that time, Senator Thune has continued to work with the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate of the Lake Traverse Reservation, the Department of Defense and other officials to properly recognize the valor of one of our country's true heroes.

Read an exceptional article about Keeble's life and service at  Military.com   í  here

Russell Hawkins, Keeble's step-son said:

"[My] feelings about Keeble echo those of all who knew him. "If he was alive today, I would tell him there's no one I respect more, and how he is everything a man should be: brave, kind and generous. I would tell him how proud I am of him, and how I never realized that all this time, I was living with such greatness."

Politics of Fear...Hillary's Way

By Janet Evans
Saturday, Mar 1 2008, 11:45 AM

I've been hearing the term "Politics of Fear" repeated because I criticized Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats regarding FISA

You see, I think keeping terrorists at bay is critical.

And yes, I believe there is incompetent Democratic leadership by Pelosi....

Regarding national security on our soil and for our soldiers, her incompetence could cause the loss of lives and important intelligence.

Terrorism:

Acts which are intended to create fear (terror), are perpetrated for an ideological goal and by a member or members of a group (as opposed to being carried out in a lone attack), and which deliberately target, or else disregard the safety of, non-combatants (civilians).

__________________

Well you want to blame Bush and the Republican's for Politics of Fear...

How do you explain Hillary Clinton and her "Children" ad?

"It's 3:00 am and your children are asleep," a voice over says in the ad entitled "Children". "There's a phone in the White House, and it's ringing. Something is happening in the world. Your vote will decide who answers that call."

"Whether someone knows the world's leaders, knows the military, someone tested and ready to lead. It's 3 am and your children are safe and asleep. Who do you want answering the phone?" the ad concludes.

What was that?

Was that Politics of Fear?

Using "fear" to get votes?

Gee, and I was blogging about terrorism, and the protection of American citizens from it....

Republicans and some Democrats alike realize how important it is to protect our country from terrorists.

The National Security Agency’s terrorist surveillance program was successful in intercepting cell phone calls, e-mails and other electronic communications between terrorists and their sympathizers.

Those of you who are against the FISA legislation...I'm sure you've noticed a huge difference now that we are back to old ways of gathering intelligence....you haven't had to worry about anyone listening in on your telephone conversations, have you?  Like they would really be coming after you.

Did you really worry about that?

Because if you really are worried about that....

I'm worried about what YOU are talking about....

Guess this isn't a "Vast right-wing conspiracy"

Chelsea Clinton     Image: Wenn

Last week MSNBC's David Shuster made a remark about Chelsea Clinton, "Doesn't it seem like Chelsea's sort of being pimped out in some weird sort of way?"  when he was talking about her role in Hillary Clinton's campaign.

Isn't it obvious his meaning was to say she is being exploited?

He picked the wrong slang to use.

He was unprofessional.

Let's get real...there's no way he was personally trying to attack Chelsea Clinton.

But hold it a minute, Hillary....

Remember this?

Bill Clinton, "I did not have sexual relations with that
woman, Miss Lewinsky."

Remember that, Hillary?

You sat right beside Bill.

You defended him.

Remember this young woman?

Monica Lewinsky as she appeared
on her U.S. Government ID in 1995

And, Hillary, didn't you, instead of encouraging your husband to take responsibility for his lack of respect for this young woman, accuse others of a "vast right-wing conspiracy?"

You want to protect your 27-year old daughter.

You say David Shuster's remark was "offensive."

Well, what do you call what went on in the Oval Office?

Immigration issue? What issue?

By Janet Evans
Friday, Feb 8 2008, 06:35 AM

Remember when the Democratic candidates were sweating bullets over the fact that immigration was going to be a hot topic brought up by Republican candidates during the election campaign?

It started out that way.

A year ago there were some tough questions being asked of candidates.

Now with John McCain set to be the GOP's nomination, it looks like the immigration debate is all but over.

McCain is pretty much on the same playing field as Obama and Clinton.

Guest workers....

Fines and penalties....

Just another soft approach to the problem of illegal immigrants.

And a slap in the face to those immigrants who have done it the right way.

Trouble! Right There in Vermont! Updated

By Janet Evans
Thursday, Jan 31 2008, 07:15 AM

"Wackjobs?"  "Nuts?"

Seems that 's what people (besides me) think of Brattleboro, Vermont citizens who have been circulating a petition to have Bush and Cheney arrested for War Crimes if they ever set foot  in their state.

One upset person who emailed the town officials even suggests there might be something in their water that led them to go to such extremes!  Ha!  That's a thought.

Read the story from Yahoo.news

Vermont Anti-Bush Petition Lambasted   Ã here

These fruitless efforts by shameless Bush-haters, along with those who have promoted similar efforts in the past in other cities across the United States, including  in Wisconsin, need to come to a stop.

Shameless because they are wasting the time and resources of all taxpayers.

As sad as that is, what is even more sad is that these people haven't got a clue about the laws of impeachment.

They haven't got a clue of what real War Crimes were or are.

It just goes to show you, more time needs to be spent on history and civics in high school and college.

I'm sure Vermont won't be the last state with people who need to get a life who come up with new ways to hate Bush before he leaves office.

This is going to be an interesting ten months ahead of us.

Brattleboro to vote on arresting Bush, Cheney

January 26, 2008

BRATTLEBORO — Brattleboro residents will vote at town meeting on whether President George Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney should be indicted and arrested for war crimes, perjury or obstruction of justice if they ever step foot in Vermont.

The Brattleboro Select Board voted 3-2 Friday to put the controversial item on the Town Meeting Day warning.

According to Town Clerk Annette Cappy, organizers of the Bush-Cheney issue gathered enough signatures, and it was up to the Select Board whether Brattleboro voters would consider the issue in March.

Cappy said residents will get to vote on the matter by paper balloting March 4.

Kurt Daims, 54, of Brattleboro, the organizer of the petition drive, said Friday the debate to get the issue on the ballot was a good one. Opposition to the vote focused on whether the town had any power to endorse the matter.

"It is an advisory thing," said Daims, a retired prototype machinist and stay-at-home dad of three daughters.

So far, Vermont is the only state Bush hasn't visited since he became president in 2001.

Daims said the most grievous crime committed by Bush and Cheney was perjury — lying to Congress and U.S. citizens about the basis of a war in Iraq.

He said the latest count showed a total of 600,000 people have died in the war.

Daims also said he believed Bush and Cheney were also guilty of espionage for spying on American people and obstruction of justice, for the politically generated firings of U.S. attorneys.

Voting to put the matter on the town ballot were Chairwoman Audrey Garfield and board members Richard Garrant and Dora Boubalis.

Voting against the idea were board members Richard DeGray and Stephen Steidle.

Daims said the names submitted to the town clerk's office were the second wave of signatures the petition drive had to collect, because he had to rewrite the wording of the petition.

He said he gathered nearly 500 signatures in about three weeks, and he said most people he encountered were eager to sign it. He started the petition drive about three months ago.

"Everybody I talked to wanted Bush to go," he said, noting that even members of the local police department supported the drive.

"This is exactly what the charter envisioned as a citizen initiative," Daims said. "People want to express themselves and they want to say how they feel."

He said the idea is spreading: Activists in Louisville, Ky., are spearheading a similar drive, and he said activists were also working in Montague, Mass., a Berkshires town.

The article asked the town attorney to "draft indictments against President Bush and Vice President Cheney for crimes against our Constitution and publish said indictments for consideration by other authorities."

The article goes on to say the indictments would be the "law of the town of Brattleboro that the Brattleboro police ... arrest and detain George Bush and Richard Cheney in Brattleboro, if they are not duly impeached ..."

Daims said people in Brattleboro were willing to "think outside the box" and consider the issue.

Daims had no compunction in comparing Bush and Cheney with one of the most notorious people in history.

"If Hitler were still alive and walked through Brattleboro, I think the local police would arrest him for war crimes," Daims said.

ANOTHER waste of time!

I've been to Vermont.

I have family who lives there.

Vermont is one beautiful state!

But there are a lot of citizens in Vermont who refuse to come out of the dark ages.

There are a lot of citizens there who refuse to let any progress come forward in their towns.

There are a lot of citizens who listen to too much Canadian radio and their views, instead of those in the U.S.

"The latest count showed a total 600,000 people died in the war?"

Where the heck do Vermont citizens get their information from?

What war are they speaking of?

The Department of Defense updates that information on a regular basis.

As of January 25th the
total count is 3,931.

Oh, they're speaking of that
disputed study done back in 2006 saying that 600,000 Iraqi citizens have been killed.

Espionage?

Is this River City out of The Music Man?

If Hitler showed up in Vermont they would arrest him for war crimes?

Well, isn't that noble of them....

Bush isn't Hitler.

I think Vermonters need to brush up on their history of exactly WHAT
Hitler was.

Maybe Vermonters need to "think outside the box" and find something positive to talk about regarding our troops.

What might those voters who are on the fence about her think then?

Could this all be a plan?

Has this been the real Bill Clinton on the campaign trail?

I'm just wondering, because, no matter how close they appear, there is no way

this is the real Bill and Hillary Clinton anymore:

Veterans Day, 2007

A Proclamation By the President of the United States of America

Throughout our history, America has been protected by patriots who cherished liberty and made great sacrifices to advance the cause of freedom. The brave members of the United States Armed Forces have answered the call to serve our Nation, ready to give all for their country. On Veterans Day, we honor these extraordinary Americans for their service and sacrifice, and we pay tribute to the legacy of freedom and peace that they have given our great Nation.

In times of war and of peace, our men and women in uniform stepped forward to defend their fellow citizens and the country they love. They shouldered great responsibility and lived up to the highest standards of duty and honor. Our veterans held fast against determined and ruthless enemies and helped save the world from tyranny and terror. They ensured that America remained what our founders meant her to be: a light to the nations, spreading the good news of human freedom to the darkest corners of the earth.

Like the heroes before them, today a new generation of men and women are fighting for freedom around the globe. Their determination, courage, and sacrifice are laying the foundation for a more secure and peaceful world.

Veterans Day is dedicated to the extraordinary Americans who protected our freedom in years past, and to those who protect it today. They represent the very best of our Nation. Every Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine, and Coast Guardsman has earned the lasting gratitude of the American people, and their service and sacrifice will be remembered forever. In the words of Abraham Lincoln: " . . . let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the Nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle . . . ." On this Veterans Day, I ask all Americans to express their appreciation to our Nation's veterans.

With respect for and in recognition of the contributions our service men and women have made to the cause of peace and freedom around the world, the Congress has provided (5 U.S.C. 6103(a)) that November 11 of each year shall be set aside as a legal public holiday to honor our Nation's veterans.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim November 11, 2007, as Veterans Day and urge all Americans to observe November 11 through November 17, 2007, as National Veterans Awareness Week. I encourage all Americans to recognize the valor and sacrifice of our veterans through ceremonies and prayers. I call upon Federal, State, and local officials to display the flag of the United States and to support and participate in patriotic activities in their communities. I invite civic and fraternal organizations, places of worship, schools, businesses, unions, and the media to support this national observance with commemorative expressions and programs.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirty-first day of October, in the year of our Lord two thousand seven, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-second.

GEORGE W. BUSH
