Looking sweet.

I’ll admit it. I’ve thought it. Just another wealthy politician’s wife.

John and Cindy McCain are pretty quiet when it comes to speaking about themselves.

I had forgotten that most people who do good are that way. Most people who do good for others, or are just good people, don’t talk about it. You see, they are too busy doing.

When I saw that video about Cindy McCain last night, the one about her life…it touched my heart.

Cindy McCain is just like so many women in America..and the world for that matter. She is caring. She cares about other human beings. Cindy McCain is like so many woman in America and the world. She is a loving mother. Cindy McCain is like some very, very courageous woman in America and the world. She has had to send a son off to war. Cindy McCain is married to John McCain, a man who also holds those same values…caring for other human beings, a loving, proud parent, a courageous man himself. Back when John and Jackie Kennedy were in the Camelot days…that wasn’t about us, the people of America. We couldn’t relate to that. We could only dream. They were that beautiful couple, practically royalty.

Now, I’m not saying Barack and Michelle Obama are like the Kennedy’s…they’re not. But they aren’t like the McCain’s either. But I can’t relate to them as regular American’s. In other words…I feel that John McCain knows more about average American people. When Fred Thompson talk’s about John McCain in the box and all the years he was there, I know John was thinking about America and what it meant to be an American. And when I saw Cindy breaking down on that video last night, or bringing that baby home to her own family, and then sending her “baby” boy off to war, it made me know she has felt the pain. They are the real deal.

Cindy McCain RNC Introduction Video & Our Nation honors the brave citizens, service members, police officers, and firefighters who heroically responded in the face of terror. On these important days, we reflect on the terrible events of September 11, 2001, and lift the victims and their families in our prayers.

Our Nation will never forget the individuals who lost their lives in New York, Pennsylvania, and at the Pentagon. America remains inspired by the countless acts of kindness and sacrifice we saw that day -- fearless rescuers who rushed toward danger, a beloved priest who died helping others, two office workers who carried a disabled person 68 floors to safety.

We also pray for the safety and success of the members of our Armed Forces now serving freedom's cause. We seek God's grace on their families, and commit to Heaven's care those brave men and women He has called home. We ask the Almighty to watch over America and pray for His providence and continued blessings on our country. May He always guide the United States of America. As we defend our country against its enemies, we pray for help in protecting the gift of freedom from those who seek to destroy it, and we ask the Almighty to strengthen all those securing liberty on distant shores.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim Friday, September 5, through Sunday, September 7, 2008, as National Days of Prayer and Remembrance. I ask that the people of the United States and their places of worship mark these National Days of Prayer and Remembrance with memorial services, the ringing of bells, and evening candlelight remembrance vigils. I also invite all people across the world to share in these Days of Prayer and Remembrance.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-eighth day of August, in the year of our Lord two thousand eight, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-third.

GEORGE W. Their wives and girlfriends are also more likely to be less satisfied with them as partners. While the study did not look directly at infidelity, the findings suggest that male monogamy might also be influenced by variations in a single gene. The study's authors cautioned that any effect would apply only on average, and that it was impossible to predict whether any individual would be unfaithful or a bad partner on the basis of his genes.

The gene in question affects the receptor for a hormone called vasopressin, which plays an important role in social behaviour, pair-bonding and sexual attachment. Its effects were first characterised by studies of different species of voles. Although the meadow and prairie voles are close cousins, their sexual behaviour is dramatically different.
Like most mammals, male meadow voles are highly promiscuous, but male prairie voles are monogamous. When boy prairie vole meets girl, the two indulge in 24 to 36 hours of nearly continuous mating, which cements a bond that invariably lasts for life. When one partner dies, the survivor usually opts to remain celibate rather than find another mate. Male prairie vole brains contain much higher levels of vasopressin than those of meadow voles. There also genetic differences in the receptor for vasopressin in the two species. “

You've got to read the whole article...it's really interesting. Seriously.

Who knew?

You can find the complete article from Times Online HERE

Derek Mueller, an Arctic ice shelf specialist at Trent University in Ontario, told The Associated Press that the 4,500-year-old Markham Ice Shelf separated in early August and the 19-square-mile shelf is now adrift in the Arctic Ocean.

"The Markham Ice Shelf was a big surprise because it suddenly disappeared. We went under cloud for a bit during our research and when the weather cleared up, all of a sudden there was no more ice shelf. It was a shocking event that underscores the rapidity of changes taking place in the Arctic," said Muller.

Muller also said that two large sections of ice detached from the Serson Ice Shelf, shrinking that ice feature by 47 square miles -- or 60 percent -- and that the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf has also continued to break up, losing an additional eight square miles."

Continue the article HERE

Information from NASA

While classrooms were being locked down, the two administrators persuaded the student to give up the gun.

"He did put the gun to his head numerous times," Lombardo said. "He never really said why he was doing it. He did say it wasn't like him to do this, and he was fearful that he had ruined his life.

"Police arrested the student, then searched the building and evacuated it room by room. The student was taken to a behavioral health center for evaluation."

Our indications are that he didn't have intentions other than maybe harming himself," Sevel said.

Investigators believe the student intended to kill himself in front of his girlfriend, Police Chief Conrad Straube said. No charges have been filed.

Lombardo said there were no warning signs that the boy was troubled. are the female flower cones of the hop plant (Humulus lupulus). They are used primarily as a flavoring and stability agent in beer, and also in other beverages and in herbal medicine. The first documented use in beer is from the eleventh century. Hops contain several characteristics favorable to beer, balancing the sweetness of the malt with bitterness, contributing flowery, citrus, fruity or herbal aromas, and having an antibiotic effect that favors the activity of brewer's yeast over less desirable microorganisms. The hop plant is a vigorous climbing herbaceous perennial, usually grown up strings in a field called a hopfield, hop garden or hop yard. Many different varieties of hops are grown by farmers all around the world, with different types being used for particular styles of beer."

"The first recorded reference to hops was by Pliny the Elder in his Naturalis Historia. The first documented instance of hop cultivation was in 736, in the Hallertau region of present-day Germany, although the first mention of the use of hops in brewing in that country was 1079. Not until the thirteenth century in Germany did hops begin to start threatening the use of gruit for flavoring. In Britain, hopped beer was first imported from Holland around 1400; however, hops were initially condemned in 1519 as a "wicked and pernicious weed". In 1471, Norwich, England banned the plant from the use in the brewing of beer, and it wasn't until 1524 that hops were first grown in southeast England. It was a further century before hop cultivation began in the present-day United States in 1629. " from Wikipedia

Early season hop growth in a hop yard in the Yakima Valley, Washington with Mount Adams in the distance

An obvious future bestseller (and possibly the final fulfillment of the American dream), the pill that mimics exercise has been under development for some time. Developed at the Salk Institute in California, the pill caused sedentary mice to burn fat no matter how lazy they were. This pill would be for more than vanity, though, as obesity has grown into one of America’s biggest public health problems. A pill like this could both help the healthcare system and get you the six pack abs you want without having to step foot in a gym."

In the not-so-distant future, these six drugs--already in the works--will change how we live, and even how we die "

See the other five pills in Pop-Sci's photo article

HERE

Oshkosh Based Company to Receive the Defense Department’s Top Award

Oshkosh Corp. Earns Top Employer Support Award
By Donna Miles
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Aug. 29, 2008 – Oshkosh Corp. is slated to receive the Defense Department’s top award next month for supporting its employees who volunteer to serve in the National Guard and reserves.

The Oshkosh, Wis.-based company will be among 15 employers nationwide to receive the 2008 Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award during a Sept. 18 ceremony here.

The Freedom Award is the highest recognition the U.S. government gives to employers for outstanding support of their employees who serve in the National Guard and reserves.

Company employees nominated Oshkosh, which designs and builds military vehicles and vehicle bodies, for the award for creating an environment they said made its employees who serve in the military feel not just accepted, but also applauded and rewarded.

Marine Corps Maj. Dion Angling, a company employee, reported that the company hosted a special going-away dinner before he deployed to Iraq in 2006, sent him care packages while he was gone, and hosted a welcoming lunch on his return. His co-workers surprised him by decorating his office for the occasion.

Army Capt. Nguyen Trinh, another company employee, praised Oshkosh for giving him the time he needed to prepare for his upcoming deployment, and keeping up its support when he was deployed.

“My company was very proactive in ensuring that I understood all the benefits I would continue to receive during my deployment, and what I could expect upon my return. The company has reached out to my wife by taking an interest in her well-being,” he said. “I am very fortunate to work for such a great organization.”

Oshkosh demonstrates its support for its citizen-soldiers in other ways, too. A “Wall of Honor” appears at each plant, displaying reserve-component members’ photos and profiles. The company contributes to deployed employees’ unit family support groups and has coordinated transportation for their Guard and reserve employees to visit their families.

The company also contributes to the Marine Corps Reserves’ Toys for Tots program, regularly attends military hiring conferences seeking current and former servicemembers for its management positions, and pays the difference between its employees’ civilian and military pay while they’re on active duty.

Robert G. Bohn, Oshkosh chairman and chief executive officer, said the company is honored to receive recognition for the support it provides its employees serving on active duty.

“Our company continued to succeed, not only because of the strength of our product and services, but also because of the integrity of our people,” he said. “We are grateful for these employees who are essential in helping Oshkosh succeed while also serving the country in a separate capacity, and to support them is the right thing to do.”

Gordon Summer, executive director of Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, credits employers like Bohn with ensuring citizen-soldiers are able to carry out their important dual roles.

“In the military, the best leaders are those who always take care of their people – and it is no different in the civilian workplace,” he said. “Oshkosh Corp. has shown that it takes care of its people. Its employees who are also reserve and Guard members know the company is helping take care of their family while they are away serving this country.”

Campaign Words

Well, this is fun.

A little play on words, if you will…

This little piece is really for the Obama supporters out there, but I found it entertaining.

Here’s the deal.

Both campaigns have blogs. McCain’s had a communications director handle his blog. Obama let his supporters create their own blogs. See where I’m going here yet? No?

So, with software technology they took McCain’s blog and took the major words from it, and they merged Obama’s blogs and took his major words (kind of like my tags list on the side bar).

Then they analyzed the larger words. They of course found that “OBAMA” was the largest word in both blogs.

The problem I have with this analysis is that you can’t compare a professional blog with one of supporters in the first place. Of course supporters are going to speak of Obama all of the time. They are all about Obama. And, of course, the professional blog in support of McCain is going to be all about going out and finding ways for McCain to win…he is going to be mentioning Obama. It’s clear as day to me.

And the word they choose to ignore on Obama’s list….

It’s a pretty large word…NEVER

However, he failed to make note of the $43.625 billion in damage the last hurricane to strike New Orleans caused – Hurricane Katrina in 2005 – and the billions of dollars the storm cost taxpayers."

"Moore also took the opportunity to take a dig at President George W. Bush and the presumptive Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain."

“I can’t see what you showed,” Moore said to “Countdown” host Keith Olbermann about a video clip including Bush and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. celebrating McCain’s birthday.“I don’t know if you showed the cake there that they had there, three years ago today – with McCain and Bush. When Marie Antoinette – when she said, ‘Let them eat cake,’ I think she was speaking figuratively. They literally were while New Orleans was drowning – eating cake.
