Ms. Susie and her daughter make balloon animals and hats |
The Summer Reading Program at the Hales Corners Library is off to a great start. The Summer Reading Program Kickoff Party was held last Thursday, June 14 and it was a blast. More than 200 adults and children registered for a summer reading club. Summer reading participants also had the chance to join in even more fun in the Hunt Room. Kids had their face painted and decorated t-shirts. They also enjoyed delicious ice cream sundaes compliments of Culver's of Hales Corners. Ms. Susie and her daughter worked hard to make some of the best balloon animals and hats Hales Corners has ever seen for the children. Kids were seen all over the library wearing huge balloon hats and having balloon sword fights. The summer reading program ends August 8th and sign-up is available all summer long. Register today for the summer reading program in the children's area of the library!

Staff later learned that, when making a splint, the tape should not be applied directly to the skin. Oops! |
Ms. Susie is injured after tripping and falling at the library |
Ms. Susie was injured Wednesday, June 20 when she tripped and fell at the library. She had just risen from the reference desk to say goodbye to the Cafe Goofe performers when she tripped on some wire tubing and fell flat on the ground. Luckily a patron at the computer terminals prevented her head from hitting the computer desk. Instead, Ms. Susie's left leg, wrist, and ego were hurt. She claimed that her wrist was the most painful of her injuries. After some deliberation the rest of the staff and Ms. Susie decided the best course of action would be to fashion a splint in order to stabilize the now swollen wrist. Fortunately, the library had recently purchased a first aid book entitled First Aid and CPR Essentials by Alton Thygerson, which the staff looked to when diagnosing Ms. Susie's injuries. The dedicated children's librarian refused professional medical treatment until after her Snack Attackers group, which was held in the afternoon. Following the program Ms. Susie received treatment and was relieved to hear that her wrist was not broken but mildly sprained and hyper extended. The doctor, after he stopped laughing at Ms. Susie's cardboard splint, said Ms. Susie's wrist should be fine within a few days.

It is common knowledge that the library is the place to get books on any imaginable topic, but did you know that the Hales Corners Library also has a wide selection of music CDs and DVDs? We regularly purchase new movie and music releases, and the best part is that you can check them out for free with your library card.
Some of our most recent DVD purchases include The Pursuit of Happyness, The Queen, Dreamgirls, Night at the Museum, and Arthur and the Invisibles. We also own favorites such as Bridget Jones's Diary, Field of Dreams, and American Beauty.
Our newest batch of music CDs includes releases by Amy Winehouse, Maroon 5, and Michael Buble. Our expansive CD collection covers the genres of jazz, instrumental, folk, rap, r&b, popular, rock, blues, country, new age, show music, international, holiday, religious, easy listening, and classical.
The new DVDs and music CDs are highly popular and may not always be available for immediate checkout. In such cases, we would love to put you on a waiting list for any item that interests you. However, at any given time our DVD and CD shelves are packed with a wide variety of movies and music just waiting to be checked out. Come in today and see for yourself!

Our goldfish are turning white! |
Something is rotten in the state of the Hales Corners Library. Our goldfish are turning white! Last summer the library acquired a beautiful aquarium through the generosity of Corners Pet store in Hales Corners. We have since filled that aquarium with 6 hearty goldfish that now appear to be sick. Two weeks ago Ms. Susie noticed that one of the goldfish has turned completely white while another now has a white mouth. The initial diagnosis was that the fish had Ick, a common disease in fish that is caused by a parasite. However, after treating the fish, Ms. Susie has seen no improvement in their coloring. Aside from turning white, both fish seem to be doing swimmingly. We'd love to hear your thoughts on what could be wrong with them!

Have you ever met a child fishing prodigy? Come to the Hales Corners Library on Thursday, July 19th for the summer program, Become a Better Fisherman: Fishing with Johnny Schultz.
Johnny got hooked on bass fishing through the Bassmaster Casting Kids program and went on to earn a National Casting Kids title. He also placed 7th in the 2007 Junior Bassmaster World Championship, and he's only 12 years old!
Johnny is a nationally-recognized seminar speaker and loves to give fishing seminars and classes to kids and adults. During the Become a Better Fisherman program, Johnny will share useful information on how you can improve your fishing.
The program starts at 2 p.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m. No registration is needed and the program is open to anyone who loves to fish.

A shocking total of 707 items were checked out from the Hales Corners Library on Tuesday, May 29th. We typically average more in the 300 to 400 range for items checked out in a day so we couldn't be happier with Tuesday's numbers.
How is it that the number of checkouts reached such heights? Well, aside from the typical reasons our patrons use the Hales Corners Library (which are, of course, that the library is a fun and happening place filled with resourceful and friendly staff), people visited us on Tuesday to register for the summer story times and programs. Once inside the library, they couldn't help but check out some of the new and exciting material on display.
We expect to keep up the bustle all summer long so don't hesitate to stop in and see us!
