Scooby Don't

Scooby Do band aids almost did me in last week.

It was early Saturday morning and art class was in full swing. Pencils were furiously sketching, pastel dust was flying everywhere, and the scent of fresh oil paints on canvas filled the air.

In the midst of all this creativeness, 5 year old Steven approached me with a problem. He was retrieving a piece of tape from the tape dispenser and had cut his finger on the dispenser’s sharp teeth.

Not exactly a bloodbath by any means, but, at age five, this can be cause for great concern.

As Steven bravely fought back his tears, I offered my condolences, apologized on behalf of the tape dispenser, and directed Steven to wash the cut under cool water while I fetched him a bandage.

A Scooby Do bandage.

That’s when things began to get crazy.

As I tended to his wound, 7 year old Hannah approached me and said her arm hurt. When I turned to look, she showed me what appeared to be a scratch; better than 4 days old.

She asked if I could put a Scooby Do bandage on it.

Not wishing to look like I was playing favorites, I granted her wish and gave her a bandage.

Thirty seconds later, another student approached me with an ailment. This time it was a sore thumb- in desperate need of a bandage.

To be honest, a sore thumb hardly constitutes a bandage. But, once again, I found myself in a tight spot. So I gave out another bandage.

Soon, Otto’s Art Academy began looking like a triage unit. I had kids coming from all angles looking to treat “wounds” with the power of Scooby Do bandages!

Head aches, knee pain, tooth aches, old wounds suddenly hurting again, you name it. I was treating the most serious cases first and telling those with the less severe injuries to wait patiently.

It was chaos!

Until finally, one injury brought the whole thing to a ridiculous end.

Through the crowd pushed six year old Kaylen, her hands cupped around her nose and what looked like blood gushing from her fingers.

She said she needed a Scooby Do bandage to fix the problem.

I went pale. This was beyond the healing forces of any mere bandage- Scooby Do or not. With a nervous crackle in my voice, I directed her to the restroom so we could diagnose the problem.

My heart began to race.

She began to giggle.

As she pulled her hands away, she was quick to notify me that what I though was blood was actually red water color paint.

Good one. Add another gray hair to the collection.

Once I regained my composure and let go of the terrifying thoughts that were racing through my brain (like recalling first aid procedures, rushing a student to the hospital, calling the parents and notifying them that their child burst into a pool of blood in art class), I took a deep breath, sighed, and gave Kaylen a Scooby Do bandage for her efforts.

Why not? After all, I believe she had earned it.

And so, in the end, I have learned another valuable life lesson in art class.

It’s back to plain bandages now, and all is at peace.

This Weekend In Waukesha

There are a whole lot of REALLY good things going on in downtown Waukesha this weekend (in addition to the good things that are always going on).

First, some of the artists from Otto’s Art Academy are displaying their work at the Allison Art House, over on Brook St (right next door to Walgreens, downtown).

An artist reception is planned for Friday, March 23rd from 6 to 8PM. Stop by for the opportunity to meet the artists and, if you like, purchase some of their work.

The student artwork will be on display there until the end of March.

When they aren’t hosting gallery nights for our students, The Allison Art House is host to scores of beautiful artwork done by area artists. The artwork changes frequently, so be sure to stop by often.

In addition to the reception, tonight begins the second annual “Spring Inspirations” event downtown.

All weekend, you are invited to join experts for exciting demonstrations, tastings, and seminars in participating businesses as they cover the season’s trends in home décor, fashion, entertainment, and indulgences.

Check www.downtownwaukesha.com for more information regarding this event.

Rain may be in the forecast, but what better way to celebrate spring than to step outside and enjoy the showers that bring May flowers.

Beats 10 inches of snow any day.

The Solution to the Tall Grass Water Tower Debate

Let’s put to rest all the controversy over the Tall Grass water tower issue.

I have a “kill two birds” proposal that I am sure will please the folks of the Tall Grass community as well as those who live and work in downtown Waukesha.

If Tall Grass doesn’t want an unsightly water tower in their neighborhood, simply put the tower downtown.

There is a prime piece of real estate located at 319 East Main Avenue that would be perfect for your tower and I am almost certain that the surrounding neighbors will support the construction 100%.

And if, in the future, you need another water tower, please feel free to look at the property at 477 W. Main Street.

The neighbors there will also gladly support a tower, maybe with a little landscaping, an out building fashioned out of limestone to reflect a historic look, and brick driveway for access.

Sounds nice.

And, if Tall Grass (or any other community that doesn’t like the looks of water towers out their front window) needs another tower, I am sure the folks over on Prospect Court wouldn’t mind a tower on the corner of Prospect and 337 West Avenue.

For those of you not familiar with these addresses, please go to www.familywatchdog.com or http://offender.doc.state.wi.us/public/ for more information.

Bring us your water towers people! You will improve your property value and we will improve ours.

Win, win.

50 Years of Mystery Soon to Become History

Can you put a price on mystery?

Evidently, you can. And that price is right around $300K…

Back in 1990, while vacationing with a group of friends in the Dells, I was lucky enough to visit one of the most amazing places in the world.

Located off the beaten path in Lake Delton, Wisconsin, there was a little red cabin in the middle of the woods known as “The Wonder Spot”. It was said that this place supposedly defied the laws of gravity. Legend spoke of strange forces at work at this site- forces that made water flow uphill, chairs balance on two legs, and ropes hang crooked from ceilings.

The cause of these strange phenomena has been under debate since the inception of The Wonder Spot back in 1957.

Some folks claim to have measured the spot with high tech scientific gadgets and have concluded that the area contains “strange” magnetic forces that have “eerie” effects on people and objects that enter the spot.

Others say that when you build a slanted cabin built on the side of a hill in such a way, it fools your eye into believing everything is being strangely warped by gravity.

To others (mainly under the age of 12), it’s the coolest place in the world that no scientist has ever been able to explain!

Whatever the explanation, the Wonder Spot’s mysterious forces can not overcome its date with a bulldozer.

It turns out “The Spot” was sold off to the Town of Lake Delton by owner Bill Carney, and plans are in the works to build a highway through the area.

A highway through The Wonder Spot?

What is happening to this world? First, they build an apartment building over Jesus’ grave and now they are paving over the Wonder Spot.

Armageddon, folks.

What concerns me most is the safety of future travelers of this highway; I mean with the influence of all that unnatural energy there, it could have detrimental effects on the cars that use this stretch of road.

I can only hope that the town of Lake Delton will take a proactive approach and post signs warning travelers of this potential hazard.
