Free Service Brought To You By The New Berlin Police Department

By Officer Tony Fus
Wednesday, Apr 29 2009, 01:49 PM

FREE...  Please help the New Berlin Police Department keep you and your neighborhood safe.  All you have to do is sign up to receive free crime alerts on you home or work PC.  These crime alerts will make you aware of what's occurring in your neighborhood and allow you to take action to reduce the likelihood of you or your neighbor from being vicitmized.  This service is different from the monthly crime stats published by Officer Hanlon.  www.crimereports.com allows you to customize the frequency in which you receive the crime alerts and limit the size of the geographical area in which you wish to receive the crime alerts.  In other words, you are able to receive practically real time information about crime occurring in your neighborhood.  It costs nothing, there is no commitment and it requires only the amount of time it takes you to read an email.  To sign up, go to www.crimereports.com and follow the instructions.  If you have any questions, please contact Officer Dan Hanlon at 262-780-8106 or Officer Tony Fus at 262-780-8148.

Police Department Cable Show Information

MISSION: POSSIBLE-Episode Forty-eight

Episode forty-eight takes us to Madison, where we interviewed David Spakowicz, the Director of the Field Operations Bureau for the Division of Criminal Investigation.  Dave will talk about the current drug trends in the suburbs and warning signs that family members can be looking for.

After that, Dan Hanlon and Tony Fus will tell us about Safety Saturday, 2009, which is being held in the Target parking lot on May 16th.

Then we head over to the Star of Bethlehem School to help the students celebrate their DARE graduation with their DARE Officer, Dan Hanlon.

Next up, it's off to Senor Luna Restaurant, where owner Kevin Larson and his staff present DARE Officer Tony Pine with a huge donation check, which were the proceeds from their 2008 DARE Golf Outing.

To finish up the show, we stop off at the New Berlin Public Library, where school resource officers Tony Pine and Paul Kaye gave a presentation on internet safety.

You can get the monthly show schedule on the city's website at http://www.newberlin.org/.  Click on "Police Department" and then click on "Mission: Possible" or check in the New Berlin/Muskego NOW newspaper (first issue of each month has the current episode's topics and schedule.)   You can also go to the New Berlin NOW website at http://www.newberlinnow.com/ to get a monthly schedule.  Each episode of Mission: Possible is also available at the New Berlin Public Library on DVD for you to check out.

Scam of the Week

By Officer Tony Fus
Wednesday, Apr 1 2009, 04:15 PM

Recently a NBPD Officer received a complaint in which a subject, claiming to be in California, called a business in New Berlin with the sole purpose of engaging in a credit card scam.  The business, recognizing the caller was attempting a credit card scam, told the scam artist to call back and contacted the New Berlin Police.  When the scam artist called the business back, the buisness representative and a NBPD Officer were on the line with the scam artist.  Fortunately the scam didn't work this time.

Through the course of the subsequent investigation, the officer discovered the scam artist was using a service provided by AT&T for hearing impaired customers.  How it works:  The scam artist instant messages an AT&T operator via the internet, and in turn, the operator speaks with the potential victim on behalf of the scam artist.  Even though this hearing impaired service is to be used for legitimate calls, the AT&T operator estimated more than 90% of the calls received through this service appears to be for fraudulent purposes and probably is not being executed by hearing impaired users.
