Parking Problems During Streetscape Finally Getting Attention

By David Tatarowicz

As readers of this blog know, I have written "ad nauseam"  :-)  about the lack of consideration for small business parking in areas where there is No Construction Work being done, but No Parking signs are left posted --- and tickets are written for patrons of businesses and residents who might have "logically" thought if there is No Work going on, parking for a few minutes should be ok --- Wrong !!

Contacting the Officials that Be had not been very productive, as the finger pointing (Construction Crews, DPW, Administration, Police, BID) invariably followed a circular pattern,

I am happy to report that Guy Johnson, the Shorewood Village President, as he promised,  has taken an interest in this situation and is reviewing it with the Village Administration and DPW.

Will there be an immediate change to the current practices ?

I don't know ---- but I am encouraged the process is being reviewed ---- and that the plight of the hapless small business owners is now a consideration.

WHAT DO YOU THINK.  PLEASE FEEL FREE TO COMMENT BELOW.

So are you proposing that when the construction crews are not working on Oakland Ave. for whatever reason (weather, problems with materials, etc.) someone should go down the street and remove the No Parking signs?  Not very practical nor logical.

If the Village police or parking enforcement sees a car parked in front of a business during "construction hours" even though no workers are in sight, how are they to know the driver intends to stay there for a couple of minutes or a couple of hours?

I hesitate to even post this because although you say “PLEASE FEEL FREE TO COMMENT BELOW” the comments to your blogs left by others are typically met with nitpicking criticism from you.

Eliza,

In your comment above, you ask: "So are you proposing that when the construction crews are not working on Oakland Ave....someone should go down the street and remove the No Parking signs?  Not very practical nor logical.

How 'practical or logical' is shutting down access to the very same businesses the village claims it's trying to help?

In a previous comment of my own, I believe I made a suggestion that might help solve the problem! Changing the 'NO PARKING' signs to "30 MINUTE PARKING WHEN WORKERS NOT PRESENT" would give folks enough time to patronize a business and still ensure they would be leaving soon should the work crews move into that area during the day!

A final aside for clarification: re: your hesitation to post because of possible 'criticism' from Dave, did not you YOURSELF just criticize HIS opinion??
