Brookfield is special

As many of us know, Brookfield is special.

This is confirmed by the City of Brookfield’s website, www.cityofbrookfield.com.  The 2000 census shows that city residents are older, more educated, and have higher median incomes than those nationwide.  Plus our homes are of a higher median value.

Other facts:  Brookfield has the third highest equalized property value ($5.9 billion) in Wisconsin for its 39,800 residents.  Milwaukee and Madison have higher property values and much larger populations (592,765 and 221, 735, respectively).

Many people complain about the traffic on the city’s roadways.  Well, could it be due to the city’s daytime population of 75,000?  Or to over 2000 businesses, 6 million square feet of corporate office space and 5 million square feet of industrial space in the city?

We’ve all noticed more and more commercial development.  Over a ten year period (1996-2005) Brookfield added 4.1 million square feet of non-residential development on 164 properties.   Thankfully, the city claims there are only 34 sites (with 258 acres) or about 2.5 million square feet yet to develop (based on “average development patterns”).

Brookfield is considered an “Edge City” to Milwaukee.  Joel Galleau’s book, Living on the Edge:  Life on the New Frontier, describes the concept. “Edge cities are perceived as ‘one place’ that ‘has it all’ – from jobs to shopping to entertainment.”  Other requirements include:

  • At least 5 million square feet of leasable office space;
  • 600,000 square feet (or more) of leasable retail space;
  • More jobs than bedrooms.
Let’s hope one of the 2020 Master Plan’s goals – “for Brookfield to continue to lead the region in managed growth” is met.

I guess I see it differently due to the fact that I moved here when Brookfield WAS special. I lived in the Town in Gaywood Estates for 15 years and that area is still fairly nice, but the commercialization of Springdale Road is not desireable to me. I've live in the City since then in the area of 180th & Bluemound and it's a zoo! I think the over commercialization of Brookfield is completely changing the nature or the community, and it's not doing a darn thing for property taxes. We need a new mayor and many aldermen. The idiotic widening of Calhoun is a prime example of how out of touch they are with people who want to live in a suburban environment. Of course, everyone has their own opinion of what makes a community "special".

We're so special that some people would prefer to move further west to avoid all this congestion and over-development. Brookfield is turning into a over-commercialized zoo that will eventually lead to us looking like , well, some former suburban areas east of us. I don't consider what happened to Bluemound road and what will certainly happen along Capitol as progress. This notion that Brookfield is "special" is exactly what gives it's residents the reputation of being arrogant.

Newcomer

I have lived in Brookfield for only 3 years.  I have been impressed with most of what this city has to offer and enjoy the convenience of the short distance to downtown Milwaukee.  I feel safe with leaving my front door open on a cool evening or going for a walk with my husband after dark.  Go to "Your Community Guide" on this website and listen to our Chamber of Commerce Executive, Carol White's description of our "enviable city in the country".  I may not be able to compare to "the good old days of Brookfield" but in comparison to other towns this size I feel like I have it all.
