Franklin aldermen just as bad as Franklin School Board

Throughout my career, I have always attempted to be consistent and fair.

Having been gone for quite some time, I’m still trying to catch up and was just informed about the city of Franklin budget for next year. The Franklin Mayor and the Common Council failed to protect taxpayers, and deserve as much criticism as the Franklin School Board.

The tax rate went up 3.1%. That means nothing. It’s the tax levy that counts. Franklin’s tax levy, after going up over 5% last year, is going up 5.7% next year. That’s on top of the 5.9% tax levy increase the Franklin School Board dropped on taxpayers.

Deeply disappointing is that city officials and School Board members are using the same crying towel, singing out of the same budget hymnal.

You know the refrain. I’ve written about it extensively. The state just didn’t give us enough money.

That’s a copout.

That’s like admitting that the way city and School Board officials budget is to stand with hands extended and wait to see how much aid the state appropriates. Count it up. Then raise taxes.

Hell, a blind man could hammer out a budget using that technique.

The other excuse is that “this was a tough budget.”

I don’t want to hear that or any other excuse, unless you’re conceding that you can’t make tough budget decisions and that your only solution is to jack up taxes.

Did the Franklin Common Council consider any cuts in the Mayor’s proposed budget? Any?

Doesn’t look like it.

It appears they took the Mayor’s whopping tax increase budget and put the big ‘ol rubber stamp on it.

The aldermen did fold up like a card table after getting just a little heat and retained the un-elected, appointed Environmental and Economic Development Commissions. That saved us absolutely nothing. Big deal.

I’ve publicly stated that I like and respect our Common Council as a whole. But after approving yet another big increase when taxpayers have clearly stated that enough is enough, maybe it’s time for change at City Hall.

In the days ahead, I will provide a scorecard on what the people with authority to tax did to you, the people who pay the bills. It won’t be pretty.

Makes you wonder how these guys manage their own households, doesn’t it?

Kevin,

I attended the informational meeting at City Hall regarding the Budget proposal.

After a LENGHTY, BORING, MEANINGLESS, power point presentation, some comments from some citizens, which were strangely IN favor of the proposed budget, some other comments regarding various things going on in the City, and then a comment from a citizen in favor of the Environmental Commission, where a "copy" of "THE PETITION" was turned in (rather than the original, which I thought was peculiar), the Mayor then proceeded to make remarks.

Then the Council took turns patting themselves on the back (all except for Steve Olson).  JOB WELL DONE!

I got the same impression that was given from those that attended the School Board meeting .... DONE DEAL.

Pathetic.

I like and respect Mayor Taylor and each and every alderman.

On THIS particular issue, the most important vote they take every year, they dropped the ball. A unanimous vote.  I won't mention names, but I thought one and possibly two aldermen would vote NO.

FRANKLIN COMMON COUNCIL=FRANKLIN SCHOOL BOARD.

A losing equation for taxpayers.

NOTE TO ANY AND ALL FRANKLIN ALDERMEN AND/OR SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS:

This is an open invitation for you to write a response to, not just me, but to all Franklin taxpayers justifying your votes to raise taxes well beyond the rate of inflation and the average salary raises for families.

I will be more than happy to publish your thoughts.

Someone doesn't have a CLUE!  My head is spinning!

Replace all the School Board members?  Wish we could!

Only TWO seats ...

Don't think you told people not to vote, Kevin . . . just impled it is better not to vote unless you are an informed voter.  VOTING 101 ...

Everyone who looks at these blogs knows that Mr. Irrelevant, Klueless Kowalski can't write. Tonight, we learn that he can't read, either.

He has totally butchered and misinterpreted previous blogs of mine. To try to explain them again wouldn't work because he doesn't understand plain English. How can you understand it if you can't write it?

The fact is, if I wasn't around for this (FILL IN BLANK WITH NOUN OF YOUR CHOICE THAT WOULD DRIVE GREG KOWALSKI INTO A CRYING FIT) to read, he'd have nothing to make feeble attempts to respond to.

Choo choo trains to Chicago that no one will ride?

Getting people upset on Veterans Day?

Advocating all kinds of tax increases but insisting he's a moderate?

Now there's stuff to be proud of....

Do they still teach Phonics???

Yes.

Kowalski spells it FONIX.

Oh, man.  I'm glad you are back!

I can't understand a word Kowalski is saying in his jumble of a blog.  What is he afraid of anyway?  Is he afraid if the bloggers speak out against high taxes the sky will fall?  If you speak out against the Alderman he will lose his position?  He sure speaks out whenever it suits his own purposes.

Getting a little tired of KRM ...  BORING!

Janet, as Al Jolson once said:

You ain't heard nothin' yet!

I'm getting caught up on everything that went down while I was gone.

Stay tuned.

Clarify

He needs a button on his blog "Press one for English."

Or at least for a translation.

So, where are the responses from the Board or City Officials?

Maybe tomorrow.  Or maybe they only talk to KOWALSKI.

November 19, 2007 11:31 PM

Kevin Fischer

Phil,

Amen.

November 19, 2007 11:33 PM

Kevin Fischer

Clarify,

There will be no responses from Aldermen. The only city official who has ever commented to me about my blog in written form is Steve Olson. The only School Board members who have contacted me are Dave Szychlinski and former member Scott Bauer.

Alderman are, no doubt, glad that the Journal/Sentinel and the staff writers for this website didn't pick up on the story and are hoping that taxpayers forget.

You have to help me make sure they don't.

If Klueless is reading, and he probably is, waiting until 1:00 or 2:00 am to post like he usually does (must be nice), I'm reaching out to VOTERS to pay attention and become MORE INFORMED so they can make an INFORMED choice at the ballot.

Am I writing TOO FAST, Mr. Irrelevant?

Unfettered Candor

Kevin,

I applaud your rendition of how the Franklin Common Council handled the budget!

When I say “purely amateur” that’s putting it mildly...something I am working on these days!

I always test conditions with the litmus of “what are the consequences” for what was done?

With Franklin’s city council and the mayor it is a simple observation – we do not have anyone who is willing to run against the current members.  This, I’m sure, is not from fear of being defeated…that shouldn’t be difficult after seeing their ineptness at budget planning.  Like Will Rogers once said, “Any fool can spend money!!”

If these Council members allowed their children to do their homework like they did with this budget, they would all be wearing dunce caps!  This should be required attire until Christmas for those Council member who agreed to this deplorable budget.

Another factor to consider is “apathy”.  You don’t see new qualified candidates running for office.  You don’t see the constituency pursuing their respective Alderpersons with entreaties that they must not vote for something without showing what alternatives there were with the monies that were available.  The easiest path to follow is “excuses” and the “blame game”.  The Council members who voted for this budget were more interested in fixing the blame rather than fixing the trouble.

No effort was put into this budget and it showed!  We reap what we sow.

Here is comes…. do Franklin residents really care??

I can’t help thinking of the line from the venerable Lon Chaney Jr. in the movie High Noon,  “People got to talk themselves into law and order [sic; getting involved] before they do anything about it - maybe because deep down inside, people just don’t care…they just don’t care".

A new endeavor, initiated by Franklin taxpayers, hopefully will bring a turnabout, or at least an improvement, on Franklin apathy and will provide a new look at how Council members are meeting their responsibilities.   More information on this at a later date.

Kevin,

Do your readers ever have to come on your blog and pacify you?  Tell you why other bloggers may not be happy with you?

Didn't think so ....

Arrgh ..... Kevin (I mean Jack).

Well.  Some of have to go to WORK, right?  You know, to PAY OUR HIGH TAXES.

I have unpublished, AGAIN,  a comment written by Unfetterd Candor, aka Larry Christian.

Larry Christian hides behind the name of Unfettered Candor.

Not anymore.

Larry Christian, I have told you numerous times aand I'm telling you again.

Larry Christian, you are not allowed to comment on my blog, ever . Go to Greg Kowalski's blog. Greg is so obsessed with getting attention via e-mails and comments that he will accept lies, slander and libel, and keep such comments posted on his blog for great lengths of time.

I have higher standards, standards that don't allow evil, cruel comments from a lonely, pathetic figure like you, Larry Christian, to comment here any longer.

STAY AWAY LARRY CHRISTIAN!
