LIBERALS HAVE A FAVORITE SAYING WHEN THEY ATTEMPT TO DEFEND ONE OF THEIR IDEAS, PROPOSALS, POLICIES, OR PROGRAMS. IT GOES LIKE THIS: “BUT IF IT CAN SAVE JUST ONE LIFE….”
Across the United States, in 135 cities including Milwaukee and Wausau, from February 25, 2009 through April 5, 2009, they came, they gathered, they stood vigilant, they prayed, they sent a message.
Unlike so many liberal protests, 40 Day for Life was, in a word, peaceful. Crusaders for unborn children made their presence known outside abortion clinics, morning noon, and night, 24/7, in every kind of weather, for 40 days.
The just-concluded campaign estimates the efforts resulted in the saving of 421 lives. I am not sure how they came up with that figure, but again….
“IF IT CAN SAVE JUST ONE LIFE….”
40 straight days.
40 straight nights.
More than ample opportunity for a newspaper reporter with notebook to stop by for a story.
More than enough time for at least one of the 4 Milwaukee TV news stations to send out a crew.
As I wrote in a blog during the fall of 2007 about a previous 40 Days for Life assembly:
“The goal is to silently and prayerfully stand vigil outside abortion clinics, 24 hours a day, for 40 consecutive days.
In Milwaukee, the vigil is being held on the sidewalk outside Affiliated Medical at 1428 N. Farwell.
I don’t know about you, but in my book, that’s a news story.
I’ve been in the news business for 30 years. Whenever a Republican President came to town, and there was a band of liberal protesters gathered outside the venue for the appearance, no matter how small the group, the newspaper and the TV stations were always there to give the placard holders coverage.
So it’s only logical that a 24-hour vigil outside the same place for 40 straight days would fall under the category of bona fide news.
Ahhhh……but this is the news media we’re talking about. Not too many conservatives in the bunch, or running the news shops. Throw in the abortion issue, and news departments decide they’re not going near this one.”
No Journal Sentinel coverage (It’s all about that “A” word).
No local TV coverage (Not sexy enough. Besides, there will be those kind of people there).
That’s rather interesting, this boycott of reporting, especially when media outlets all around the country saw fit to give it space and air time.
421 lives saved. Who knows what they may grow up to be and accomplish. 421 lives.
The Wausau Daily Herald, unlike the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, believed 40 Days for Life warranted their attention.
And again, I congratulate Milwaukee Journal Sentinel columnist Patrick McIlheran for his great column a few years back about a previous 40 days for life rally.
On the 40 Days for Life website, there is a section about what people said about the peaceful rallies. My favorite is what a clinic worker said to a 40 days for life volunteer at a vigil in San Mateo, California:
“Why don’t you pray at your own homes? You’re making our work here difficult!”
That’s right.
