Wag the Dog

Why does a dog wag its tail? Because a dog is smarter than its tail. If the tail was smarter, the tail would wag the dog! An old joke that applys to today.

Election should cause changes on the Enviromental Commission

With the confirmation of Kristen Wilhelm and Steve Taylor as aldermanic representatives of the 3rd and 4th district, this will now reduce the Environmental Commission by two members. As both Kristen (currently the EC Chair) and Steve (EC member) would make it 3 alderman on the commission (Ken Skowronski is the current alderman on the commission) and this would violate the membership rules of this commission.

The Environmental Commission consists of 7 members, 1 Alderman and 6 citizens, all appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Common Council.  The term of the Alderman member is 1 year, only while in the office of Alderman, and expiring upon the April 30 following the appointment.  The citizen members are appointed for 3-year terms, expiring upon the April 30 of the third year following the appointment; excepting that the initial appointments provide for 2 members to serve a 1-year term and 2 members to serve a 2-year term, expiring upon the April 30 of the first year and second year following such appointments, respectively.

Alderman Ken Skowronski

This would require two of the three alderpersons to step down from that commission. My guess is that you will see Ken Skowronski and Steve Taylor leave the commission. This would open the door for Kristen Wilhelm to have the Environmental voice to the council she has been seeking since Don Dorsan left the commission.

Or am I just WAGGING THE DOG here?

I think Kristen could step down and let Greg Kowalski have the chair. But I'm just an outsider, so what do I know?

None of them should really have to leave because they don't really do anything, remember?

Actually, Wilhelm and Taylor should step down voluntarily, and Mayor Taylor should appoint two new members.

The Mayor appoints the Aldermanic representative who is typically confirmed by the Council and by practice and most ordinances, the commission, board or committee elects their chair.

I put in my Volunteer Fact Sheet and had the Environmental Commission as my priority choice.

Cindy:

For once you and I agree. Greg Kowalski is the prime choice for Chair.

Steve:

My blog was just guessing what would happen. Given Kristen's professional background, awards received for environmentalism and that she is the only current member with this expertise, it only makes sense that Mayor Taylor will most likely appoint her as the alderperson on this commission. Kristen often said she felt the EC was not heard on issues on the council and that Ken did not push things forward to them.

Joel:

That is great, as there will be a required loss of two members. I hope we have others step up to the plate. I think you would also be a natural choice of vice-chair with your organizational skills to Greg Kowalski's chairmanship. Not to say that Nancy or Wesley would not make an excellent choice also.

Kevin:

It looks like they don't have a choice and neither does Skowronski as it is an appointment for only 1 year. I think Ken has higher aspirations also!

Organizational skills?

Joel

Anyone who runs a successful campaign as you did, would need/have organizational skills. I also believe you are a student of Political Science which should be an asset to moving forward the wants and needs of the EC. Believe me, those will come in handy as Administrative Rules, Procedures, and order have been on the EC's agenda for over a year now.

Am I wrong?

Bryan,

My organizational prowess and vast political experience notwithstanding, the intention of my volunteering was for me to be a more informed and involved citizen of Franklin.  My volunteering should not be characterized as anything other than this.  I hope that I have something valuable to offer the city that I love.

That's great Joel.

I am entirely serious.  Don't misrepresent me.

If you can not take a complement then fine . I never represented you as something I have not observed about you. If you are not organized then just say so.

However if you would prefer that I say something derogitory......

I just won't do it.
