Stop The Pulling! A Lesson in Loose Leash WalkingDue to popular demand, the Wisconsin Humane Society is once again offering our Stop the Pulling Seminar. This class is a lesson in loose leash walking for a dog and her guardian. This one-time class will teach your dog to walk on a leash without pulling (in a game-like lesson) using reward-based training. If your dog is taking YOU for a walk, consider bringing him to WHS’ next Stop the Pulling workshop on Wednesday, September 9 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. This class is for dogs of all ages who need some extra assistance walking politely on leash.The fee for our Stop the Pulling class is $20, and all proceeds go to the animals at the Wisconsin Humane Society. Scout Nights with Animals at WHS

Join the staff of the Wisconsin Humane Society for a fun-filled program where scouts can learn all about companion animals. Make some cool cat toys, learn how to train canines with our "Bow-Wow Basics" program and even receive a behind-the-scenes tour! Classical Concert for Canines at Lakefront
Bring your dog to celebrate the Labor Day weekend with Milwaukee’s free “Classical Concert for Canines” at the new Coast Guard Pavilion, 1700 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive, on Friday, September 4 at 5:00 p.m. Cellist Jane Hollander and pianist Wayne Wildman will perform. The first eight donors of $25 or more to WHS can make a "doggie dedication" on-screen during the concert. Those interested in showing a photo of their pet for the "doggie dedication" should bring a flash drive with an electronic image of their dog, and a few sentences describing their pooch! The Wisconsin Humane Society is grateful to individuals who volunteer, donate and adopt a shelter animal. Hundreds of thousands of animals have found loving homes through WHS since 1879 and former adopters are encouraged to post alumni photos and stories on our website, www.wihumane.org.

For a $130 donation in honor of our 130th Anniversary, you can post a special message and photo of your beloved companion animal on the Wisconsin Humane Society’s website. The page will be accessible through the end of the year and you can share your photo and story with friends and family. Wildlife photos are also encouraged!

Calendar Contest Accepting Pet Photos

Smile for the Camera, Scout!
Is your pooch the cutest on the block? Was your kitty destined to model? The Wisconsin and Ozaukee Humane Societies invite you to send your best shot of Scout or Sassy for our 2010 calendar. Local celebrity judges will determine the top thirteen photos, and one lucky companion animal to be chosen for the highly coveted cover photo. Twelve others will be selected for “Pets of the Month.” The first 500 photographs submitted are guaranteed to be included in the calendar!

Entries are now being accepted. There is a $15 non-refundable entry fee for one photo, or $10 each for multiple entries. All proceeds from the calendar benefit the animals at the Wisconsin Humane Society. There are also advertising opportunities available to area businesses! Check out the contest information and submit your photos!

Join WHS at Bartolotta's Northpoint Snack Bar at Bradford Beach, 2400 Lincoln Memorial Drive, on Thursday, June 18 from 5:00p.m. to 9:00p.m. Bring your well-socialized dogs for some fun on the beach and help raise funds for shelter animals. Bartolotta's Northpoint Snack Bar will be donating proceeds from food sales to WHS. They offer an incredible range of items, from portobella sandwiches and grilled tuna to shakes and fries, so you can get dinner for your human family, too!

Barkley, the fluffy wonder

Barkley is a handsome pup who is always eager to snuggle. He has a fluffy honey-colored coat that he loves to have petted and brushed. Barkley is an eleven-month-old Chow Chow mix who is looking for a home where he can be an only "child."

Orphans Danny and Annie

The Ozaukee Humane Society, sister shelter of WHS, is beginning to see a lot of orphaned kittens – just in time for Mother’s Day, ironically. Read about the adorable orphans, Danny and Annie, who are currently being treated at the shelter. You can donate to help OHS cover the cost of not only their care, but the hundreds of other sick orphans they expect to see this season. Can you feed baby birds this summer?

Volunteers are needed to help feed and care for orphaned wild birds in the wildlife nursery at the Wisconsin Humane Society’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Center from May through September. This is a great opportunity for individuals to learn about urban wildlife and help save the lives of baby animals.

Responsibilities include feeding baby birds, preparing food and cleaning cages. Volunteers must be at least 13 years old to work without a guardian, or 12 years old with an adult guardian. No previous animal handling experience is required. The time commitment is one day per week for three hours. Four different shifts are available between 8am and 9pm, seven days a week. This is a great experience to help save local wildlife and build great relationships with other animal lovers! Upcoming orientations will be held on Sunday, May 17 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Wednesday, May 27 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Lola's smile is contagious

Lola's smile is contagious and so is her enthusiasm for life! This happy-go-lucky girl enjoys the outdoors, long walks on the beach and playing frisbee on a summer day. Her unique pattern of markings is very distinctive, and she has the most gorgeous brown eyes.

Lola is a 1 year old St. Bernard/Australian Shepherd mix who is looking for an active family or guardian who would enjoy teaching Lola new tricks and skills. She LOVES to learn and is a very smart student.

Ariel, Bruno, Brownie and several other adorable, sweet puppies are looking for homes at the Wisconsin Humane Society! All dogs are spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. All adopters also go home with an adoption handbook to help their companions make a smooth transition. Interested in adopting a puppy? We also offer several excellent training classes and seminars based on positive reinforcement.

Not ready to keep up with the energy of a young pup? Meet Bella, a sweet 4-year-old Beagle who has eyes that melt your heart, or Zoe, a 6-year-old Chihuahua who would love to curl up on the couch with you and a good movie. The Wisconsin Humane Society is hosting a public Memorial Service to celebrate the life of this remarkable leader and friend on Monday, April 13, 2009 at the Pfister Hotel, 424 E Wisconsin Ave., Milwaukee, (414) 273-8222. Doors open at 5:00 p.m. and the service will begin promptly at 6:00 p.m. A special block of rooms has been set aside for out-of-town guests; please contact the Pfister for reservations. Special thanks to Marcus Hotels and Resorts and the Pfister Hotel, who have graciously donated the space for the memorial service. Learn more about Victoria's life and accomplishments.

In honor of the work that Victoria Wellens did for the Wisconsin Humane Society, The Pfister Hotel would like to donate 10% of revenue on Monday, April 13 from 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. to the humane society. 10% of all revenues from Café at the Pfister, Mason Street Grill, Blu or the Lobby Lounge will be donated back to the Wisconsin Humane Society in Victoria’s name. The Wisconsin Humane Society is deeply saddened to announce that Victoria Wellens, the Executive Director of the Wisconsin Humane Society, lost her battle with cancer early this morning. The Wisconsin Humane Society is deeply saddened to announce that Victoria Wellens, the Executive Director of the Wisconsin Humane Society, lost her battle with cancer early Saturday morning, the 28th of March, 2009. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Victoria’s husband, Jim, her stepchildren, Aaron and Elizabeth and grandchildren, Morgan, Mia and Mya. Victoria was an amazing human being and her commitment and dedication to the Wisconsin Humane Society and the animal welfare field was unparalleled. For 15 years, her outstanding leadership transformed the humane society into a beacon of hope for not only homeless animals, but for people who strive to make the world a kinder place for animals. She set the highest standards for animal care and was nationally recognized for her valiant efforts and remarkable leadership.When Victoria came to WHS in 1994, the shelter was literally sinking into the ground and staff members were desperate for better resources. In just five years, thanks to her brilliant efforts, Milwaukee boasted one of the best shelters in the country, a place where animals receive excellent care in a nurturing and loving environment. Victoria pioneered so many innovative programs. Education was a cornerstone of her vision, ensuring that compassion and respect for animals would endure in future generations. The wildlife department moved out of the dark basement at the old facility and into an illuminated, spacious center that annually treats more than 5,000 wild animals. Victoria ardently fought to end the suffering of dogs in puppy mills and continued to campaign for the welfare of feral cats in our community until her last days. She was determined to expand the same amazing programs and services offered at WHS into Ozaukee County, laying plans for a state-of-the-art facility that will better serve the needs of animals and citizens in Ozaukee County. Armed with the knowledge of her vision for the future, we hope to see these dreams realized in her honor. “Words cannot express how much we will miss Victoria’s presence, leadership and vision,” said board president Tony Enea. “Her impact on animals’ lives cannot be measured. We are fortunate that she left us with an incredibly strong management team and structure and her legacy will serve as a foundation for the continued growth and outstanding efforts of the Wisconsin Humane Society to save lives.”

4 on the Floor - No Jumping!
Does your dog think her name is "Down!"??? Does Spot greet visitors with two paws to the chest? Come to the Wisconsin Humane Society on Saturday, March 28, 2009 from 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. for this one-hour workshop with your dog. They will work on teaching your dog to politely greet you with all four paws on the floor by using positive techniques and reward-based training. This class is for dogs that are 5 months of age or older and their guardians.
